LOT To Start Flights Warsaw-Beijing

Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:25 pm

According to United Press International, LOT is going to restart WAW-PEK route from Sep.

WARSAW, Poland, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The Polish national air carrier LOT announced in Warsaw Wednesday it will restart flights to China after an eight-year hiatus.

LOT will begin flying to China with Boeing-767s three times a week, beginning in September, Radio Polonia reported.

Absolutely fantastic!

Any reason why they chose PEK and not somewhere like HKG, NRT, BKK, SIN or most notably PVG?

They'll get feeder traffic from the new Star partners Air China and Shanghai Airlines which is great aswell! Are there any plans to codeshare with one of these airlines?

Are their strong ties between China and Poland or is this new route due to the recent economic boom of both countries?

Hear that rumors too. Is it supposed to be cooperation with Air China.

I keep some scepticism though, remember that they also announced flights to India a year ago which came to nothing.

Congrats, LOT. But can't help wondering, why start up in September? Routes to China are not just business routes, leisure travel - both ways - accounts significantly, so September seems a bit odd. BUt maybe they didn't have the plane ready before or something. Hope it materializes.

LOT needs more widebody planes (763) to open more longhaul routes to Asia but it is hard to find in good conditions with GE engines, until 787 will be deliverd to the fleet in October '08. In summer season '07 will use all 8 767 fleet on rouets between Poland and USA and Canada. So LOT decided to start flights to PEK in September '07 when summer season goes to sleep and few planes are waiting in front of hangar. For egzample 763 SP-LPC and LPF this winter flies for Santa Barbara and Air Europe.

Bad news for VV. They had a chunk of a load from Poland, doing WAW-KBP-PEK.

Good news, first reasonable idea from LOT in a loooong time... (IF it really happens). No announcement on their own site so far though, which I found weird.

Definitely the latter one. (Actually yours truly is in Beijing right now, but not on behalf on any Polish or Chinese business.)

Quoting Kevin777 (Reply 4):

Could be because of CA and FM joining *A only then? Also, see below abt the fleet.

I'd say mostly business, for now. (No specific data to confirm it though.)

Quoting Kevin777 (Reply 4):

The whole long-haul fleet is just seven 767's, and I'm hearing nothing else will arrive until 787 are ready (hopefully some time in 2008). These aircrafts are used almost exclusively on routes to North America.

I wouldn't say strong ties, but Chinese are coming to us like they come to everywhere with their business, so I think there is a 1.5 billion customer market  Wink

And, actually, there are a lot of Korean and Japanese investments in my neighbourhood (Wrocaw), so even if there are too few Chinese to fill our planes, other Asian nations will help.

Good News

But

When are they actually going to bring something useful to the table for Star Alliance?

The talks were about either India or China, so PEK won that one. Remember that the 787 are only replacements for some, but not all 767's.

A lot depends on the prices.

I thought they had 7 767s ?

Probably, because they used to do this route in the old days.

Could be a factor, but the capacity-issue is probably the significant one

No doubt, there is a lot of business traffic, and for now it is probably highly dominant, but leisure is getting a bigger share relatively speaking. For instance, a major reason behind SK launching ARN-BJS was Swedish tourism to China. I know that WAW/ARN-BJS shouldn't be directly compared at all, but still, with both Polish and Chinese people becoming more and more affluent, I think WAW-BJS could turn into a significant tourist route, too.

Can anyone tell me where LOT's 767s are from and how long they've had them? I know that at least one is an ex-Varig machine. There is Portuguese signage all over it and the in-flight map is in Portuguese and English (no Polish) and even says "Welcome Aboard Varig". You'd think they could at least spring for new software for that thing...

SP-LPA/B/C and SP-LOA/B are ordered and delivered to LOT, they are leased (all of them I think).

The used to be SP-LPD which was ex Gulf Air and ex Malev, and is probably sitting on the desert right now.

SP-LPE (in Star Alliance c/s) is the ex VARIG machine.
SP-LPF is ex Air New Zealand.

There were some rumours circulating that SP-LOA/B were to go away, and more 767-300/ERs leased, prior to the 787 delivery.

Might not be an easy task. Second hand 763 are rare species. VV's been looking and waiting for one for over half a year.

Interestingly that LO 763 (in LOT liveries) were performing flights for VV late last year from their KBP base, while VV 763 were undergoing checks. This lasted for at least several weeks. Does that mean that LO has excess longhaul fleet?

In the winter - yes. Frequencies are reduced. Hence leases to VV, VE, Santa Barbara this winter.

So there is definitely only one ex-Varig plane? I expected there would be more because I flew ORD-WAW on it, then a week later WAW-JFK.
