Its my understanding that they are using 737-400 of Xtrair, but have
contracts whereby they have subleased some 737's and will be operating their own by autumn.

Another service to IWA which is good news. Adds to the Chicago area and soon to the LA area service.

From their website:

"With Bellingham International Airport (BLI) as its base of operations, Western offers residents of the quickly expanding region of northern Washington and southern British Columbia, Canada a more convenient and less expensive alternative to the Seattle-Tacoma and Vancouver International Airport."

They'll be so far behind in their payments to Xtra Airways for services rendered that Xtra will pull their a/c from the operations and Western cannot find someone to replace them with.

Yikes. Great start:

The Boeing 737 pulled away from the terminal about 50 minutes after its scheduled departure time of 7 a.m.

The flight was scheduled to return to Bellingham at 1:15 p.m. today, but it was expected to be about an hour behind schedule because of the late departure.

They have a very lofty mission statement for a startup. How about something a little more realistic. Frankly, I don't think they'll make it six months.

Didn't Delta buy the rights on the name when they bought Western?

The one and only Western Airlines is history and the service they had was outstanding and far above everything that is available on a scheduled carrier in the US today.

Well if you look at their destinations, they are flying mostly leisure travelers on vacation routes. Disneyland, San Diego and Phoenix are hotspots. They don't serve LAS because they'd be competing with Allegiant, but if this airline can partner with package travel groups, then it can work. There is a reasonable population in that part of the country. Washington State only has about 2 airports with any significant service. BLI is a good distance from SEA. It's a two hour drive. This part of the country also has long miserably cool and damp winters. There are plenty of people wanting a break south.

I think it's the type of concept that can work if they do their marketing well enough.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Airline employees worked through the night to get a makeshift double-wide portable building ready for the start of check-in operations.

“That building was split in half yesterday morning,” managing director Steve Olszewski said.

They had this day planned for how long? LOL!

Anyways, I hope they do good. I would be curious to see what the paint job is going to look like.

everybody missed their initial announcement that also included a bli-rno-san flight that was pulled due to lack of bookings. initial bookings to phx/williams gateway are strong, and, just as allegiant, the catchment area that the airline is hoping to grab from is huge, from northern seattle all the way up and into Canada. If I am correct, it was planned for the flights to run later yesterday and only yesterday specifically for the press and media and to have time in each airport for the opening day ceremonies. There was a clip on their webpage if you went into the booking engine that even noted this that on the 18th, flights would run later than depicted for the ceremonies and events that each airport had planned.

I believe it is a 737-400 being used and subleased from Xtra Airways, everybody knows this company already, the renamed Casino Express after being purchased over a year ago and the new investors dumped the 737-200 a/c for the more fuel efficient 737-400 which also now offers greater range, pax load and carrying capability. BLI is now reminding me back a few years ago when Western Pacific opened up their COS hub, and remember they called it the I25 corridor, fares low enough they were grabbing pax from the northern CO border to the souther CO border and all in between. friend in college was from Fort Collins and would fly every other weekend from PHX back to COS to see his fiance in Fort Collins, and he did it because of the fares being so low. BLI has that prospective, especially since pax having to travel from Canada are found to encounter huge international taxes and I think that Allegiant had even made comments that their BLI flghts were flying over half full with Canadian nationals. Add that to the fact that Seattle isn't really that far away with I5 being right there

Sounds like a combination of Morris Air and Western Pacific at their early stages. Secondary airport in a larger metro corridor. Start with vacation areas. Public charters like Morris. Tough to build up any hub transfers, though, unless they branch into Canada.

Morris ended up being successful enough to be bought by WN. WP was originally successful but exploded beyond all control. Will be interesting to watch.

Nope, the first flight arrived from BLI today 1/19 at approx. 1600hrs. Xtra also had a 738 depart for GYY at about 1130hrs today also.

Not too bad, but the location of the titles is all wrong, and the tail looks like they ran out of red paint. Perhaps a variation of the old Western W is in order, or maybe put the name inside of the white band on the tail.

We must have flown a different Western Airlines. I mean, I did enjoy the alternating Yellow and Lime Green seats on the DC-10's, but I don't remember getting off their flights and feeling like it was the best experience in the world.

I do miss seeing them in the skies over Seattle though -a long with Hughes Airwest, they were unmistakable even from a distance.

I bought a ticket on the first BLI-ONT trip, it was ok, reminded me of Morris Air though, the inflight service needs a bit more tweaking, but that will come as the airline grows up more, all in all, not a bad experience, but nothing of what the original Western was.

Good representation of the 'Western-style' font, but the tail stripe is just sad. No character.

You'd think that there'd be a more proper tribute, but oh well. This won't be around for very long.

That was a good one! Big grin

I wish I was more Photoshop savvy. That photo just screams out for a re-work. I would first get rid of that boring red tail, paint it white and move the 'Western' type-set back to the tail where it belongs.

Then, instead of the original red cheatline with the flying 'W', I would just insert the 'Flying W' box logo on the forward fuselage to appear as a billboard.

I'd keep the engines painted red and the overall white paint would have mica flecks in it to make the red 'pop.' You know... like VS does.

Just my interpretation.

The original route system for the first five years was as follows:

SLC-COS
SLC-LAS
LAS-LAX
SLC-LAX
SLC-BOI
SLC-SMF
LAX-SMF
SLC-PHX
SLC-MCI
SLC-Jackson Hole, Wy.
SLC-OAK

"SOUTHERN CALIFORNIANS gathered at Vail Field on April 17, 1926, to witness their first air mail flight performed by a fledgling company called Western Air Express using Santa Monica-built Douglas M-2 mail planes. The early morning flight to Salt Lake City via Las Vegas gave Southern California its first tie into the transcontinental air mail system and represented the start of scheduled airline service."

I have a picture of this day in this book if anyone's interested in seeing it.

Truth be told, I'm not sure I will ever fly the new Western Airlines. I never got a chance to fly the old Western Airlines, but I have this image built up in my head from hearing years and years of stories. One final thought..

I miss everything about Western. I know the heritage lives on with Delta, but it just doesn't seem right that we don't have a hometown airline anymore.

Yes, there are a lot of local hometown carriers that are gone or have been folded into larger legacy carriers, but there's just some comfort knowing that your favorite and admired is just that close and tangible to you.

OK, I need to stop reminiscing and face facts. The traditional WA is long gone and it was wonderful while it lasted. May the original Western Airlines live in our hearts forever. And the best of luck to the new Western. May your history be rich and long lived.

Here's the first photo of the new Western, looking good in red and white!

Good representation of the 'Western-style' font, but the tail stripe is just sad. No character.

You'd think that there'd be a more proper tribute, but oh well. This won't be around for very long.

I agree, the tail needs to be fixed. Why don't they just dive in, and copy the old paint jobs? Old timers like us would enjoy it!
