What's Wrong With This IFE Flight Info?

Fri Jan 19, 2007 3:23 am

Take a good look at the information and you'll notice something is not right. I took this pic on a CX 773 flight in Asia earlier this week. I thought the IFE route display and information airlines show on their IFE system was tied into the onboard GPS. I'm beginning to think otherwise since the information is obviously wrong.

What does the system use to display the IFE flight info?

erm you've got to do 1200 miles in 40 mins?

If i remember correctly it uses information from the cockpit, obviously this is a dodgy connection of somesort.

You're math is a little off. It is actually flying at 1,807 mph!!!!!

That's fast.

That's nothing compared to flying over 35 hours from LHR to IAD on a VS A346:

Time zones man... Time zones...

It's basing the time left based on arrival time-current time and forgetting to shift in a time zone.
I don't care what you think of my opinion. It's my opinion, so have a nice day :)

FYI, the time left and arrival times shown were accurate. It was the distance that was off.

Should it have been 126.5 miles?
It's not a near miss it's a near hit!!

I have seen similar things recently on three AF aircrafts (a 77W, a 343 and a 332) - time to destination passed kind of "slower" but it was quite short from the very beginning  Wink.

I thought it was one of the many bugs in the Rockwell Collins IFE  Wink. What IFE does CX use?

Was the distance wrong? Or was it the calculation of time remaining that was wrong?

No, AAFan is right. It would be travelling at 1807 MPH. 42 min = .7 hr. 1265 mi/.7 hr = 1807 MPH.

The distance was wrong. We arrived about 45 minutes after I took the picture, at around 11:00 AM in BKK -- pretty much as shown on the Time to Destination and Arrival time on the IFE display. Interestingly enough, the flight information channel was turned off about 20 minutes prior to our arrival. I guess someone told the cabin crew and they turned it off to avoid further embarrassment.

Well, given that we were at cruising altitude -- and cruising speed -- 42 minutes to cover 126.5 miles is quite slow. Besides, I don't think the system displays in 1/10 miles.

Don't know, but ironically, the only other time I ever noticed something remotely similar to this was back in September on another CX flight. We were flying into BKK, the day after the new airport had opened. When we landed and pulled up to the terminal at the new airport, the IFE Time to Destination showed 0:00; however, the Distance to Destination showed 8 miles (or something like that). Obviously, the system was still programmed for the old airport.

for clarifying: AF has the remaining time (grossly) wrong... distance seems to be ok

Well, I didn't take a picture, but I was flying at a flight level of 37000 miles a few days ago on MH according to their great IFE... They must be flying at this level all the time... incredible...
