Air Astana Goes 767 & A330

Sat Jan 20, 2007 1:28 am

Read in the last Airliner World issue , Air Astana will receive 2 767-300ERs on lease and 1 A330 in the second half of this year.

The first 767 (Ex KLM , probably PH-BZK , but not 100% sure of the reg) will arrive at Orly in a few days to be painted in full cs.
Is the second 767 , also Ex KLM ?
Where will come the A330 from ?

In another way Air Astana will dispose of its 737 and 757 fleet. They already have 4 A320s , and will receive soon (if not already done) 2 A321s.

Future looks bright for Air Astana.........

Getting hold of the a/c is just part of the deal. Air Astana is still far from the "western" operation standards as far as consumers are concerned. They have access to money, which is good, and they try hard, which is a plus. Long way to go though.

London, almost certainly, as this is seen as one of their prestige routes with higher loads. It's also one of their longer flights, and popular with the post-Borat crowd now, it's seen as quite a trend destination!

I'd be nice if Air Astana introduces a nicer colorscheme with the widebodies, it has one of the most BORING liveries out there.

Air Kazakstan's colors were so much better.

good deal, their A320s have trouble heading to IST sometimes with winter and reserve fuel

I think one of the WB for Air Astana will fly ALA-HKG, rumored after visit of president of Kazakhstan to China.

But others... Don't know. Flight loads are very pour on allmost all routes. May be domestic Almaty - Astana? Or upgrade for Almaty - Moscow?

Given Air Astana flies as far west as LHR, a 767 is better then a 757 for such a long trip. This airline also flies widely to Asia, so they have two good reasons for wide body airplanes.

Heard rumours that they may also introduce new routes in 2007 (though no details on destinations).

I remember LH decided to serve FRA-ALA with A300-600 soon, and currently uses A340 on that route. Could it be that 4L will get D-AIME? I remember that during their arguments last year, they agreed on a "closer" cooperation, which was the basis for LH to get their lost slots back.

Good news for everyone involved. The people at 4L must be planning some sort of expansion. Kazakhstan is a growing country, and beginning to focus on tourism. They have a bid to host the 2014 Winter Games.

Air Astana should make a deal with Borat to improve its loads  Big grin

Business is picking up in Kazakhstan, as well as tourism, but the winners of the air race I think will be LH, TK and SU. At least for the higher yeld passangers.

Air Astana must become superb to compete, which will be extremely difficult without a sound domestic market. And I'm not even raising the political and managerial issues here.

Well, managerial actually assume political risks. If Kazakh PM takes the decision on type of fleet for Kazakh carriers (which was the case last fall), the whole industry is at dire straits, since no checks and balances available for quality business decisions.

Hardly managers have freedom from political influences in the countries where:
- democracies are not fully established
- politically engaged (originated) capital invested into major airlines
EK, I assume, few others may be a rare exeption.

I believe, both may be the case with Air Astana, as well as with many other carriers across the former Soviet Union. This does not mean though that Air Astana is not capable of becoming a great airline. Im saying that the odds are...

My old and lovely buddy D-AIME will fly for LX, AFAIK. I spend years inside D-AIME and D-AIMD  Smile A306 is only for summer, A343 is scheduled for winter 2007 back again.

Although CH Aviation said that AB was going to take the -700s along with 1 -800. Why did they suddenly get new, boring A320s?

Shows that a good FF program really has some benefits for the airline.

But KL is a good alternative indeed. Cheaper tickets and better inflight service on the pro side, but then the increased waiting time in AMS compared to FRA (at least from / to HAM) and the lousy reliability with baggage handling speak against KL. And their FF program of course.

LH648, maybe you can answer my following questions:

I've read they originally got the 757 because the runways at some airports in western Kazakhstan (Atyrau, Aktau, Uralsk ?) were in a bad condition and thus the double-bogie landing gear of the 757 was better suited to those runways than that of a 737, is that right ? If yes, has the situation improved ?

Second, is there any chance that they might come to MUC one day ?
