Guess The New Airline Coming To MSY

Sat Jan 20, 2007 6:01 am

We'll be seeing a new (or returning) carrier here soon. The question is, which one?

Just a few minutes ago I saw some airport folks snooping around the old Frontier offices behind the currently vacant Frontier ticket counter, as well as the ticket counter iteself. So of course, I asked them. They responded with a fairly cold "we can't tell you". So I asked them "can you at least tell me if it's an airline?" (sort of an obvious question, but these didn't apprear to be the brightest folks). They responded by saying "yes it is but we can't tell you who".

So there you have it. Very vague answers, but it appears that we'll see a new or former carrier back in here fairly soon. Any guesses?

I think it'd probably be F9 with the 170's. I have heard from many people that F9 plans on resuming service here in '07. What about an airline like Spirit? I've always thought they'd do fairly well in New Orleans. Allegiant maybe, since there's currently only one nonstop to LAS? Here's an idea: Midwest....who would then have counter space right next to AirTran.

Let the guessing begin.

That would've been my guess with SkyWest CRJ's to MCI.

Midwest has said as much that they would be back this year.

MSY-MCI always did well when NJ and YX flew the route. It's a market that's missed from here I'll tell you that much.

Good for midwest, especially good for MSY, glad to see more airlines coming back and aviation doing well down in the big easy.

MSY is an underrated airport. The section that I was in (UA/AA) back in May was kept up beautifully. MSY deserves another carrier for sure.

According to their jobs website, there are currently no listings for New Orleans. There is a lot of speculation regarding a new independent ExpressJet operation starting in cities that are posting GM and Airport Supervisor positions, but again, nothing for MSY.

Well, I've snooped around, and I have confirmation on two things:

1) It is NOT Frontier, Midwest, Alaska, Mexicana, or Spirit.

2) Announcement will be made during the first week of February.

The anticipation is killing me!

It's a domestic airline. Unfortunately AF/LH aren't on the horizon...for now.

So I guess possible candidates include Sun Country (I don't see how), Allegiant (I guess I could see that), and....I have no idea.

Whomever it is.. I hope that they made a stipulation..

"Before we start service, you have to bring your website into the 20th century". For real, it looks like the website is the original from when the internet first started..

But it should be interesting to see..

But from the list of all domesticate airlines currently flying independtly..
 checkmark American
 checkmark Delta
 checkmark Continental
 checkmark Northwest
 checkmark United
 checkmark US Airways
 checkmark AirTran
 checkmark jetBlue
Alaskan

I can't see NK going in. They are to busy adding Caribbean and South America flights to their route map. If the merger between Midwest and Airtran goes thru, I could see Midwest going in.

But, in all I would bet it to be Allegiant. They could do LAS, TPA, and MCO. Of course they would be up against WN on the TPA and MCO routes but they would be able to handle WN with out a problem.

I have also read that Westjet wants to add more US cities to it map this year.

And remember to that the Cruise Lines are starting to come back in MSY for 3,4, 5 and 7 night cruise to.

Just my thoughts

I am thinking that Allegiant makes the most sense out of the one's left.

I can't see SY starting service since MSY-MSP on NW is a thin market to say the least...one (sometimes two) daily DC-9's/A319's is all the market really requires.

Allegiant, however, would without question start MSY-LAS, which only sees one flight a day from WN currently. Since HP has not restarted the route, I could see Allegiant doing pretty well on it, even though they tend to stay away from routes with competing airlines. Also, perhaps they'd do some P2P from MSY....if they take over the entire F9 counter, they'd have five check in positions...more than needed if they only run one flight a day.

I guess we'll see...it should be interesting...perhaps it's Air Gumbo or Direct Air! lol

Yes they would. WN is but a shell of its former self here, and they have seen a chunk of their passenger base switch over to DL/FL on flights to Florida. It's not hard to compete aginst WN nowadays down here.

I disagree. Given the service levels of other airlines on the route (Southwest) or with good connections on the route (United, Continental, American), and the fact that the NOAB would likely not budge on fees for a carrier like Allegiant, I don't see them as coming. Certainly not to Vegas. If anything, I think they would start service to PIE. Either way, probably not.

Anyone for Air Canada?

While Canada is not the U.S., AC flights (at least any flights AC would likely run to MSY) are "domestic" in the sense that they do not require FIS.

From the Denver business journal on January 11th:

"Frontier Airlines signed a nearly 13-year agreement with Indianapolis-based Republic Airlines to operate 17 planes for Frontier's regional jet service.
Republic Airlines, a subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings (NASDAQ: RJET), will operate 17 Embraer 170 aircraft, but Denver-based Frontier (NASDAQ: FRNT) will maintain control of routing, scheduling and ticketing. Frontier also will purchase the jet planes from Republic."

Pre-cleared flights must still land at an airport with an FIS. MSY has an FIS and customs agents on duty.

Just for conversation's sake, do you think Allegiant could set up some sort of "focus city" in MSY ala their entry into the Tampa-St. Pete market? IIRC, upon annoucement of serving PIE, they started flights to the cities shown below:

I have no idea what kind of O&D exists for some of these cities, but "focusing" on leisure travel to destinations like Orlando, Tampa, and Las Vegas, creating a point on their map to serve leisure travelers to their existing cities wouldn't surprise me all that much.

Just a thought,
