Big Announcement At STL Tomorrow...

Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:48 pm

I'm not at liberty to say what it is (yet), but I may spill the beans later tonight. A teaser - it will involve Concourse B.

Let the speculation begin!!!!

I thought B was used by American Connection by little puddle jumpers to towns like Kirksville, MO; Cape Girardeau, Mo; etc.

My vote would be B6 I would think Frontier would use the D concourse if they are expanding. Airtran would already have service to STL if the Midwest merger goes through. Is this a press conference or just an announcement?

I would guess Air Tran might make it a new hub. Probably a mix of 737 and 717 to ATL.

I love concourse B in STL. Much better than that long D concourse Easy to get to and all the gates are close to each other. Perfect for a mini hub for anyone.

Wow, that's quite a bit. I would guess AA's next move is to either can STL-ATL or change it to S80's. I really thought it would be S80's by now anyway...

16-20 daily flights?

7-ATL
3-MCO
2-FLL
2-TPA
1-RSW
1-PBI

Would definitely be interesting to see if they jump on any of AA's cash cows like SEA or JAX.

Regardless, this has been a long time coming. Dialogue between Lambert and FL officials has been going back and forth for years now, as the Stl-PD has actually covered it relatively closely.

Does anyone know why AirTran gives Kansas City so little attention? I've always thought that they were missing a golden opportunity at KC.

As for FL if they want a decent operation there, they have to worry about having the Midwest folx at MCI feeling threatened. It would be interesting though if one of the routes they start is MKE-STL since there is no current low-fare competition.

I could see something like this if they wanted to go all out....
4x ATL
2x MKE
2x BOS
2x BWI
1x MCO
1-3x other FLA
Plus anything westbound
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Add SFO to that list! Interesting that there has been rumours of a F9 ramp-up as well. Airtran and F9 have a new ff agreement.

I wish the best of luck to FL in STL, and maybe they will push AA around a bit!

That's what I'm worried about. Contrary to popular belief in St. Louis, American really does a lot to keep Lambert anything other than a sleepy little airport. I don't want anyone to give AA a good reason to leave, we need them.

IF they really are "going after" AA, it would be interesting to see what they do. Nobody has ever really stepped on AA's toes in St. Louis, AA and WN kind of work their way around each other. I guess we'll see if St. Louis is worth defending.

Actually, i don't think it is JetBlue. I'm assuming your big announcement is the confirmed AirTran flights - probably means that B6 will add STL in about three months, if their recent route planning history is anything to go by.

I think we have already seen the beginning of how AA will react. They have added mainline to SAT, AUS, RDU and 5x to LAX, they have removed mainline from FLL, 1X LAS and reduced frequencies or did not keep seasonal increases in other Florida markets- with the exception of MCO. F9 to Miami could be interesting.

It's not just MCI.. AirTran doesn't give much attention to a lot of their "older" stations.. RDU has service to ATL and that's it. Is there potential at RDU for FL? Yes.. have they taken it? No! I just don't get it.

No RSW service..
No MSY service..
No MCI service..
No JAX service..
No HPN service..

the opportunities are endless.. but seems AirTran only like to explode "new" stations and not their old established stations..

Wll, since there are other sources that have published the info, I don't see why I couldn't confirm it.....

Indeed, Air Tran will start service at STL in May out of B concourse with 5 flights a day intially. I don'y know what the expansion plans are afterwards, but I could see them seriously expanding out of B.

So there you are kids - Air Tran is coming to STL!

Is there room enough O/D traffic to these markets currently served by AA and WN, and DL (in the case of ATL) for FL to make money and expand, and not at the expense of these other airlines?

I can understanding luring airlines that would serve more markets to STL, that don't have competition, but, how many people are really going to Atlanta (and beyond) to warrant a fourth airline on the route?

F9 and even B9 would make a great deal more sense in STL as they open up markets that are not seen in STL since the passing of TWA (like Mexico and the Caribbean). We' shall see.

A little extra info somewhat related....

Some of you may be wondering, "what about Regions Air?". I hear through the grape vine that they are on the brink of actually being kicked out of Lambert. The Airport Authority is evidently having some big time financial issues with them. They may yet move to C, but one way or another, their days on B are numbered.

I also hear through the same grape vine that unless something drastic happens, you won't see JetBlue at STL anytime soon. They are demanding to much. Free gate space, no landing fees, etc., etc. Somewhat "diva like" demands that are unrealistic.

It's about time. While I love Delta, they have owned this market for some time from ATL. Last year at one point I had to pay around $850.00 r/t for ATL-STL.

This is good news for consumers as well as FL. Congrats to them.

3x ATL
1x RSW
1x MCO

Bout time though, how long has little Bloomington, Illinois had FL service? Three years? Four years?

However, as far as STL goes, I am not quite sure FL will be able to handle the heat that WN might throw at them, not to mention AA, that is if they really care.

Drat... I was hoping for FWA. After all, we were in the top 5 cities (in terms of votes) in FL's poll, ranking up there with PHX. Maybe we'll be next in line after STL, though.

But still, I think that AirTran is in for a big fight at STL, especially with all the loyal AA flyers in the area, plus a big WN presence. I have a friend in the area, and you couldn't get her to stop racking up those AAdvantage miles (she's Executive Platinum, BTW), even if FL offered a much lower fare.

The question is, where would they expand to (route wise)? Probably not worth offering flights to BWI. Most of the destinations offered out of BWI are south of ATL anyway, so customers would most likely rather connect via ATL. The same is pretty much true for all the other hubs/focus cities FL has. The flights from RDU would be going in the opposite direction of all the the other flights offered from those hubs. Almost all the routes of out MDW go to the Southeast. All the flights out of MCO go north. Most of the IND flights go south; two destinations out west. Probably easier to continue just filtering those passengers through ATL.

If AirTran is serious about making a go of turning STL into a hub, then there are two questions to answer.

1. How does this affect their attempt to buy Midwest? Since Midwest has hubs at MKE and MCI, it seems kind of silly to start building another hub between the two.

2. How does this affect MDW? AirTran wanted to make MDW a large hub, but Southwest beat AirTran out of the ATA gates. Southwest has such a large presence that AirTran can't seem to grow any at MDW. Could AirTran decide to give up on MDW?

I wonder if AirTran isn't so much as thinking of stealing from AA as much as stealing from or stifling growth at Southwest. From what I've read, executives at AirTran are still fuming over MDW, and Southwest really hasn't done much in terms of growth at STL.

STL-BOS is interesting. Fares usually around $400. AA has 4 dailys (3 rjs). FL has a fairly good presence in BOS.
