Wed Jan 24, 2007 3:40 pm

ATWOnline reports that Austrian Airlines has secured blanket rights in Iraq which means it can fly to cities like Basra, Mosul, Baghdad and other cities once situation progresses.

It launched 2 weekly Erbil flight in the Kurdish region, a 3rd weekly to be added, eventually daily.

It also plans to increse the MTOW of 320/321 which enables them to fly further to other Middle-eastern points, and will install long-haul business class seats on 320/321

Meanwhile, Erbil Airport is aimed to be the new Middle-eastern hub as the Kurdish Government to invest $300million for upgrading.

They should wait and see how EBL will work out, before even thinking of serving other potential hotspots in Iraq. Basra (BSR) may come earlier than SDA or Mosul (at least I haven't heard about any dangerous situations in Basra for a long time, hence my assumption that BSR will come before SDA).

So that is their new long-haul strategy? Selling the A330s and A340s and instead deploying A320s and A321s on long-haul routes?

Good luck...

No A320/321s on longhaul routes, but Routes like Dammam, Jeddah or Riyadh.

The fares to Erbil are really expensive also... over 900 euro return and that's in November... I was tossing up whether to spend a few days there as it's one of the safest places in Iraq right now and that'd be a stamp to have in the Passport, but not at that price.
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!
