Flying Carpet - Iraq - Aircraft?

Thu Jan 25, 2007 10:18 am

I was reading this blog that included a blurb about a flight from Baghdad to Sulimaniya in the Kurdish North; when I came across this interesting quote:

Quote:
The runway here is short and is flanked between two gorgeous mountain ranges – our Iraqi Airways flight (operated by a Lebanese company called “Flying Carpet” – seriously…) made as graceful a landing as it can, considering it had to use a parachute to slow the plane down on the runway.

Pictures of Flying Carpet don't exist in the database to my knowledge...I searched, unless they operate under another name which is most likely.

But what I really want to know is what kind of civilian transport aircraft exist today that require a parachute to land? (FYI, this runway is over 11,000ft!)

Also, why doesn't Sulimaniya have an IATA code if it receives passenger traffic? The only identifier I could locate is ORSU.

Here is a link to the Blog....

Is the guy who wrote this making things up?

I guess they just don't have their own heading in the pull down list.

OK, now which one of these aircraft needs a chute to stop?
