Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, the world's fourth-biggest aircraft maker, said it's in discussions with Japan Airlines Corp. for an order of as many as 10 regional jets.

...

Winning the order, worth as much as $330 million at list prices, will help Embraer break into the Japanese market for smaller aircraft that's dominated by rival Bombardier Inc. An order from Asia's largest carrier by sales will boost Embraer's bid to increase the Asia-Pacific region's contribution to its total sales to 14 percent in 20 years from 8 percent currently.

''The number of aircraft and timing of introduction are not fixed, but we are thinking of introducing them in time for the expansion of slots,'' Stephen Pearlman, spokesman at Japan Airlines, said in an e-mailed reply to Bloomberg News queries late yesterday.

So JL is going for the E170 or E190. Interesting move as JL has been pretty darn loyal to Bombardier (parts made in Japan...NGO). Wonder who would operate them, mainline or J-Air?

Or create another wholly owned subsidiary.
We, Japanese airlines, love subsidiaries.  Smile

The article goes on to say:

Japan Airlines has said the regional jets would be operated by its J-Air domestic subsidiary, which already has 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200s in its fleet.

That is the NKM operation isn't it? Could J-air operate these out of NKM or NGO? Sure would be cool to have an HND connection not that it would be profitalble at all.

Great news for both Embraer and JAL. For some time many thought the deal was guaranteed for Bombadier...amazing shift of directions, and congratulations for another achievement of Emrbraer.

This was Emrbraer's second new customer in less than 1 month: first KQ and now JL!

The article just states that Embraer is in discussion with Japan Airlines about an order for the 170/190. Bombardier is still in the contest offering the CRJ700/900.

Cheers,

Another interesting article that posted an hour ago stating how superior the Embraers are.

Not unless they fit the CRJ700/Embraers with less than 56 seats.
