Ode To ATC

Fri Jan 26, 2007 2:24 am

All

We all love to talk about commercial aviation and look at all of the cockpit, exterior and interior shots of aircraft but one thing I would love to see more of are photos of ATC towers, mainly interiors.

To me it is a very special thing and a tasks (well many tasks actually) performed by some very special and dedicated people. Most of us will never fly aeroplanes nor will we ever get to work in a control tower directing jets on the ground, runway and air - the closest we will ever get are pictures.

So to you all if anybody has photos of the interior of ATC towers I really think people would appreciate seeing them - I know I will!!  Smile

Cheers as always

Mark

Thanks for the kind words, I know my fellow co-workers on a.net will also appreciate them.

I know it is difficult to find pictures in RADAR rooms, towers, and centers....and even though you want to see that you won't get a true feeling for the operations as much as if you have the ability to get to a facility for a tour. Most pilots are able get into ATC facilities for a tour simply by coordinating it over the phone with the local AT facility.

So enjoy your local spot and thanks for the thread!  Big grin

There's a small picture in this news article of the main London Area Control Centre. Its an old picture so there are a few extra things on the walls now but you get the idea.

Also here is a comparison of the workstations used in the old LACC compared with the new:

TREENY, thank you. If you are interested in how ORD operates go to www.BigAirport.com then click "safety." Once there, you will find descriptions on the various positions at ORD ATCT as well as answer questions on how ZAU (Chicago ARTCC), C90 (Chicago TRACON) and ORD ATCT work with each other. It also offers some insight as to our "method to the madness."
I will have a Manhattan.
