Fresno To Reveal New Airline Service On Feb 6

Fri Jan 26, 2007 2:45 pm

FAT put out a message that an announcement of a new airline to serve the area will happen on Feb 6.

Details are still quiet, the airport director says they are under a confidentiality agreement until then.

XJ is also my guess.

I hope a route to SAN is included in the announcement; I'll be watching to see if our Airport Authority also holds a press conference on that date.

Come on FAT', what are you waiting for? Where are your thoughts?

Wait a minute.  idea  On another thread (F9 Summer Expansion) you discussed the new slots at SNA, including one for AQ... That's it. I'm changing my guess to an AQ tag-on; doing the same thing as about a year ago when they got a new slot and added a SNA-SMF-SNA flight to hold the slot. Since I've seen nothing about any new a/c yet for them, this would allow them to serve a new city, add a departure to SNA, all with no new metal needed. What do ya think?

My bet is AeroMexico. Mexicana won't be left alone in the FAT-GDL/MEX market. Here is DOT's approval for AeroMexico's application for FAT.

The followup article today speculates the same as most of us, ExpressJet. They also speculate routes from FAT to ONT, SAN, and SMF. But we'll see.

The article also points out that the city of Fresno just approved a new domestic route incentive plan which would provide a minimum of $30,000 in fee and rent waivers for each new route for the first 120 days.

That was also my first guess. The timing is too close to the Feb 1 date that XJT has given to announce the independent operation not to think that. My guess is that Feb 6 would see an ERJ in the new livery for photo ops at FAT.

LOL, OK I thought about CoEx branded flights also. And of course I guess I could be like a lot of people on a.net and say Southwest/JetBlue/AirTran/Virgin would be good at Fresno but I won't. Oh wait I just did.  Wink

I did consider AQ but the ExpressJet timing makes more sense. I'd love to see AQ, in fact just told my wife we should take advantage of their current sale offer I got in my email, $99 ow from the California coast. But we can't get away.

I thought about that too. A Feb announcement would work well to start booking the spring break travel to Mexico. But the XJT timing makes more sense.

Here they are hiring managers in FAT.

Which is why I think most of us say it is probably ExpressJet's local announcement. But there of course could always be other possibilities.

The Fresno hiring for XJT, along with the other cities, has been in our discussions in an earlier FAT thread:

Clear this up for me....
Is this ExpressJet going to be as a Continental branded product, or as ExpressJet?

ExpressJet branded. Details are still rumored.

I just read this article which explained things so far pretty well. Some of the things are probably not true at the start. For example this article quotes a consultant who thinks routes like SEA-ICT make sense. But neither city looks to be in the list of potentials at xjet.com's job postings.

AQ to SNA would be great too.

Not sure about SMF, timewise it's right on that drive-versus-fly bubble. When you factor in security and rental car expense on the far end, I'm still not seeing a big demand here.

And I wouldn't be surprised to see ExpressJet announce an initial destination or two under their own brand (SAN being the single most likely) and IAH under the CO brand at the same time - that'd be a big win for Fresno.

While I'd love to see AQ add a tag to FAT onto a coastal-city flight, I'm just not sure there's a big Fresno-Hawaii market that's going unserved right now - there's ample connection opportunities already, and a through-service flight just isn't that big a difference.

I haven't seen SMF as strong either. Even years ago when UAX had EMB-110s Bandits on the route I flew it a number of times and loads were always light.

My feeling is that it will depend upon whether XJT plans connections or not. Then SMF might serve to connect Fresno and other California cities to say GEG and BOI or others.

The main California city seems to be developing to be ONT. I see they are hiring Mx there now too.

The FAT to Hawaii market seems to have been growing the last few years. The Hawaii Visitor Bureau now lists the Fresno area as tied as the largest market west of Kansas City without direct flights to the Islands. I don't think the market could handle daily but I could see 2 or 3 days a week easily.

A 2-3x weekly service via SAN or SNA would be great. I keep hearing that rumor, so maybe.

That would be a hoot!

There is a connection to the very distant past with Continental on the SEA/PDX-ICT route.....It shows up on Continental route maps of the late 60s....seem to remember it as a CAB route award case, that never really went anywhere. (The routes instead moved to Denver. Continental then expanding down the west coast to SJC and BUR)

Here are a couple of images of that route map.
Only CO routes to Seattle and Portland at that time in fact, according to this route map, are from Wichita. (?)

How is there a market to ONT from FAT? Could FAT really use a flight to ONT? The only think I can see is if B6 comes in and flys to LGB so you can connect to BOS, IAD, ORD, or IAD. That is the only LA area thing I can think of. XJT I can see going to SAN and HOU but not to SMF. No market what so ever. Sacremento is just to close and for what connection? At least when you connect in SFO you hook up with UA and can go pretty much anywhere major you want internationally and nationally.

I can understand the AM trying to get onto MX for the flights they have been doing. A huge market is here and someone needs to expand past the GDL flights.

FATFlyer, how many gates are currently not being used? 3? Will XJT take one for themselfs or do you think they will share with HP?

XJT is coming in at a great time. They get the $60,000 wave right off the bat to help them start this city as well. Great move by the head hanchos.

Hi!

That's truly excelent to have a flight from FAT to SAN if that goes along....and FAT deserves it! It's quite logical, FAT have direct flights to most big californian cities, like LAX, SFO! I know that when I was living there a meet a some people that went frequently to SAN, to study or to visit!

Hey SANFan,

ExpressJet does have a 2 letter (IATA).. it is XE
For pure information/knowledge sake... a lot of stuff is still used with "RU"... but officially now it is "XE."

Hey FATFlyer,

ExpressJet does use XJT as its NYSE symbol.. it also uses it in general talk when ref. between mainline and coex... often it's CAL and XJT... but, the official ExpressJet 3 letter code (ICAO) is BTA. It comes from the operating certificate being from Britt Airways.

They also have a 3 digit IATA number. If they are able to somehow succeed with this, at least they will be able to go completely paperless, which would means that they would be 100% IATA compliant by the end of this year for both revenue and non-rev.

DLConn operat FAT-ONT with Metros about 15-20 years ago and I seem to remember there being 10 or 12 of us per flight. The Ontario/Riverside area has boomed since then so it could be larger. Also rumor has it that ONT would be a big focus city with connections (XJT is hiring maintenance and other positions there). So FAT-ONT would provide traffic to other flights, for example GEG, AUS, or others.

I have my doubts about FAT-SMF unless there are connections at SMF to say BOI or GEG. Heck if Amtrak is on time the train runs Fresno to Sacramento in only 3 and 1/4 hours, and that avoids the fog delays and security time. Rail used to work well for me if I didn't want to drive.

But the state's negotiated govt fare with UA for FAT-SMF is $130 ow advance and $170 ow last minute. (  Wow! SMF to SBP or PSP on UA is much lower then that) $260 RT in advance and $340 RT full Y? Depnding upon traffic I could see XJT bidding on that next year at a lower rate and starting AM and PM flights.

Quoting QXatFAT (Reply 19):
FATFlyer, how many gates are currently not being used? 3? Will XJT take one for themselfs or do you think they will share with HP?

I expect XJT will take 1 gate for its flights. I'm guessing XJT will operate 5 to 8 RTs a day out of Fresno to 2 or 3 cities. I expect ONT, SAN and possibly 1 other.

Technically there are more than 3 gates available.

5 and 7 share a waiting area as do 6 and 8 and the old smaller areas for gates 1/3 and 2/4. And there are the future 16 and 17 at the end of the concourse. The doors for future jetways are there just add the bridge and go, although Skywest would lose using the 17 ramp area.

Quoting QXatFAT (Reply 19):
They get the $60,000 wave right off the bat to help them start this city as well.

The program is $30,000 to $60,000 per route. So first it could be less than $60,000 depending upon how the airport calculates the amount. But then it is per new city so if XJT starts several routes it could add up quickly to a larger amount.

Yep, I knew you were correct about BTA. But many people just assume XJT is an unofficial abbreviation. Some people use it because they are investors, or someone like me who switches around between 2 and 3 letter ICAO/IATA codes and the company stock listing codes.

Well the other gates are "walk out on the tar mac" gates correct? So there are really only 2 with jetways. I have been at gate 6 before for an HP flight because of the normal gate could not work for us. I would think that they would try not to give a jetway gate to XJT just for the fact of them wanting to expand to more mainline aircraft.

This is outrageous! It will cost you $60 on gas to get there and back! There will be no market for this. I believe that the route will tank if it gets started.

Quoting FATFlyer (Reply 24):

Yes 15-20 years ago but now with the way LAX has so many flights connecting to where people need to go, I see it not being that great of a market. Maybe braking even. If the only connections out of ONT being AUS or GEG or BOI, then those flights will hardly be filled. I would rather fly QX and go up north then go south to go north. Correct me if I am not useing this term correctly but the O&D for FAT-ONT I just dont see because of the "growth" of ONT. This is all just in my opinion.

FAT at the most is in need of mainline aircraft to new destinations in the Mid-west to East coast markets. We do not need to saturate our markets with just California routes. Look at how successful AA is with the flights to DFW. Flights to major hubs is what we need. I will be greatful if AA started service to ORD, NW to MSP, UA to JFK.

It is already started, UAX is charging the state that if someone wants to fly SMF-SFO-FAT on state business. And that should be a discount over what the public would pay.

That was all O&D 15 years ago there were only a few people who would switch to a DL flight at ONT, most FAT travellers who needed connections did it at LAX or SFO depending upon the airline.

Those are only a few examples. It sounds like ONT will have many flights which might provide many connecting opportunities. Other examples might be MCI, OKC, TUL, TUS, ABQ, COS, SAT, and others. They are all rumored to be part of this startup along with others, a total of 24 cities are planned. But we won't know specific routes and/or connecting opportunities until next week.

There are a few factors that might tip the scale.
First, there are two ways to get to ONT from FAT, the first taking I-5 all the way down into L.A. and then out the 210 or 10. The other way is scooting over the Tehachapis, down thru the Cajon Pass.
Neither are quick.

The question is.
Has the Greater Ontario/Riverside/San Bernardino and surrounding area matured to a point beyond being a bedroom community for Los Angeles County?

The area is experiencing tremendous population growth, but what about the stuff that would drive an airline route? Like business headquarters and employee concentrations?
Those are questions I do not have answers to....I think the biggest challenge however is getting people off the habit of thinking that LAX is the only airport that has flights to the places they want to go.

Let's pretend L.A. did not exist, and it was just ONT out there by itself....the metro area would be as big or bigger than Cleveland, Sacramento Cincinnati, San Antonio, Kansas City, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Orlando, San Jose, Milwaukee, Columbus, Providence, Indianapolis, Norfolk, Austin, and Raleigh.
(Population discussions always invite argument...so let's just say the greater area ONT has to pull from is over 2 million.....let's see if it means anything!)
Good luck to BTA, XJT, CoEx, or whoever they are!

Hey guys,

Today I was at FAT and looking at the ticketing counters, where would XJT come in at? I believe that G4 should give up some of its counter space. FAT will need to expand even more now that they have challenged airlines to come in and more destinations = more frequancies. Another option would be to take out the Arcade. No one was playing in it the whole time I was there! What do you guys think? As of right now...if FAT got many offers by airlines (3 or more) they would not be able to handle it.

I don't know where they will be placed short term.

But FAT will start a ticketing lobby remodel shortly. It will convert the lobby into a Yosemite/Sequoia theme with more of a Sierra style look. (ask around for the start date, I thought it was late 2007 in the fall)

As part of that they will also remodel all ticket counters. Let's see if I can explain what I've heard about this. Unfortunately I don't know the most recent info, this is what I heard last year.

The counters will be replaced to allow them to be shared by any airline, kind of a step up and signin setup. Airlines would not have a full set of dedicated positions but would rather open more shared positions at busy times and reduce down at slow times. Electronic signs behind positions would help guide passengers.

So for example Allegiant might only have 1 or 2 positions most of the day but then expand either direction from there opening more checkin positions a couple of hours before a flight. They would not be scattered around, simply expanding positions east or west only when needed.

That would actually look pretty cool. If they had fake trees or real trees in the terminal and check in counters would be pretty sweet.

I will do that!

Well to me, I dont seem to fond of that. I like the idea of walking in and seing the different airlines ticketing signs above their counters. I love that look. I like the idea that Horizon still has with the F9 ticketing counter still with them. But to just have electronic signs, thats a bit tacky in my opinion

Thanks for the thoughts and info FAT. Hopefully we will find out more closer to the 6th about XJT and its plans at FAT

Their website is already up showing a route map with FAT to ONT and SAN. Connections at ONT heading east.

I also thought you might like to see this. It is an architectural rendering of one of the proposed looks for the ticket lobby.

I have not seen any revised plans so I don't know what will make the final project. Things like electronic boards and shared check-in spots were mentioned to me some time ago but these plans all change. We almost have to wait until they are under construction to get a better idea.

That does look very nice. Thank you very much for shareing that.

I think that of course there would be more renderings for the other parts of the airport ticketing counters as they would need another section besides that one. But I do like it. Seems like some class down on the floor maybe looking at something. Would be a very mondern airport.
