AA 996 MIA-GRU Emergency Landing In CCS

Sat Jan 27, 2007 1:44 am

Pax of AA flight waiting for more than 6h in CCS. AA has not provided any solution yet, whether another flight would be available to continue onwards to GRU or whether hotel accommodation would be provided.

Apparently some pax (especially business class) are being accommodated on RG 8943 CCS-GRU B763 (23h10-07h00).

Any more news?

225+14 people on board. Apparently an electrical problem started a fire in the cabin and forced the plane to land in CCS.

Pax to be taken back to MIA tonight.

No very interesting news here:

They say it was on the way to MAO and that the emergency was due to a fire in the cabin. Passengers still staying in Maiquetia....

245 passengers a board and also with many children's (and mostly Brazilians) from MCO. They will all return to MIA in two AA flights, and from MIA will fly again to Brazil.

Pax requested a charter flight CCS-GRU thru Brazilian Consulate, but AA denied the request.

thats bad customer service. Wouldnt have been lest costly anyway, instead of flying them back to MIA and then again to GRU.

or whether hotel accommodation would be provided.

what about immigration??? Can they just legally enter Caracas.

Depends on the passport they have. US citizens and Brazilian do not need a visa.

Read this:

from a press release

Quote:
"All things considered, it was faster to get them back to Miami and then down," said Hotard, citing regulations that place limits on flight crews' working hours.

Not bad customer service, prohibitive is more like it. I may sound like I'm being mean but you're not in the operations department seeing all of the other logistical nightmares this type of thing would creat by "chartering" another airplane. These passengers are being taken care of in the best way AA can. People need to be patient when sh** hits the fan. Not everything is going to go everyone's way, but that's life right? They will make it to their destination and their safety wasn't compromised, although a little inconvenienced, but sometimes sh** happens.

Why would AA take them back to MIA and then reroute them to GRU? I hope everything goes smoothly.

Because it is almos impossible to get the from CCS to GRU. RG operates a nice little daily 737 stopping in MAO, I think not even daily. And this flight has a load of around 110 % !

RG8942 (GRU-CCS) runs 6x weekly with the 763.

VARIG flies to BOG (RG8698 - GRU-BOG) with the 733 daily with a stop at MAO.

At least that what Amadeus says.  bigthumbsup

A GRU-CCS flight with one of the planes they keep idle at GRU or GIG would take at least 14 hours (and 2 crews). As probably they do not keep extra crews at both GRU and CCS, and the capacity of a CCS-GRU non stop is really very low, they decided to use regular flights CCS-MIA (with may be one extra-flight) and put them back in a plane to GRU with a brand new crew.

Also, probably they will cancel AA906 (GRU-MIA) today because of that.

Have to admit after the stranding in Texas last month I would have seriously thought that AMR would have gone to great lengths not to have a repeat incident this soon...even if it outside the US where press coverage...at least at the beginning would be sparse.

First off...flights from Brazil back to the US are full so there was a full load of pax in Brazil to come back that night....along with a legal reset crew. Secondly AA keeps a couple of Deep South birds on the ground the whole day in the US to prep for the next night. Should have not been an issue to launch that morning to CCS to continue down to GRU. Worse to worse a 763 would have made it but could have left them cockpit crew problems at the other end while minimum rest was done but even then it could have been what is called a 'rocket'...down..min rest....back up delayed but better than canceled.

Something is rotten here...after having their ops center on TV for a week to have this succession of bad decisions is amazing....

AA, who is about the most conservative user of its fleet around - and who does have spare aircraft, could just as easily send another aircraft to CCS to carry the pax the rest of the way,

but AA has a gift for finding the worst possible way to serve the customer.

Blaiming AA for the lousy schedule between CCS and GRU is not fair. Viasa is long dead and Varig is a shadow of what it was, Caracas is hardly its most destination. AA best way to deal with this is via Miami where they have plenty of airplanes and multiple daily flights to Sao Paulo or Rio.

A) Unlike the AUS situation the PAX are actually in the terminal not on the plane-or at least thats what i understand

B)Bringing in an extra plane would cause crew legality and other scheduling issues

C)Routing them through any of 4 (?) daily CCS-MIA flights and then onto any of 3 MIA-GRU flights is much easier

Wow. Would anyone care to comment on the fact that there apparently was a freaking fire onboard?! Was it a false alarm or was there really a problem? Either way, I'd be pretty happy to be on the ground in one piece, even if it meant waiting for a bit.

I'm the last one to defend AA (I'm a UA FF) but don't know what they really could have done given the situation. The argument that they should've learned their lesson after the DFW/AUS debacle is a valid one but you have to take into consideration that this was an international flight, not some hub-to-hub flight that could easily be swapped out or rerouted. You have to factor in customs, crew rest, fleet availability, etc.; I'm not sure there's much else you could've done short of handing out hotel vouchers and rebooking on other carriers (if waiting for an AA seat wasn't an option).

Despite the uncomfortable situation, I'm very pissed because I was supposed to go down to CCS this weekend and now I missed an AA 777!

Damn it!

I just read a Reuters article on this incident that said the likely source for the "odor" was a short in the captain's audio panel. So, perhaps there wasn't an actual fire, but enough concern of one to put the plane down ASAP. Good thing, too, as the tragedy of Swiss Air flight 111 will remind us.
