First Big 07' Order, Who/when?

Sat Jan 27, 2007 2:49 am

Jan. 07' is almost gone here for us all and I was wondering what carrier is due to place the first large order of the year?

I'm not up-to-date on all the Airbus know it all and only some on the Boeing side so maybe with input we can try and figure what carrier's will buy what a/c and how many?

EK 748i/787-10
LY 787/A330/350
NH 748i/777
CX 748i/787
IB 787/A330
BA 748i/777/A380
AA 787/737
NZ 787/777
LH 787/A350

I'm sure there are other carrier looking that others can help out on.

I think the first BIG order of '07 will be from EK....lots of talk about them buying a large assortment of 777's lately.

Also maybe NH....hopefully a big A380 order Big grin

Quoting BoeingFever777 (Thread starter):
EK 748i/787-10
LY 787/A330/350
NH 748i/777
CX 748i/787
IB 787/A330
BA 748i/777/A380
AA 787/737
NZ 787/777
LH 787/A350

There are more.

Not sure LY is looking at the A350. According to their CEO NH are not looking at the 748 but are looking at the 773ER and A380. CX will also be looking at the A380 and A350. BA are also looking at the A330 and A350.

Other likely 07 orders that I can think of:
SU 787/A350
QR A350 signing, maybe 787
SQ A350 signing, maybe more 787
LH A320
DL 787
UA A350/787? 748i?
VS ?

Wasn't Air Asia's A320 order (50 firm/50 options) a big order?

AirAsia is supposed to announce any day they've reached an agreement on 20+ A330's to go with their 50 A320's they ordered a couple of weeks ago.

Wasnt their commitment to the original A350 at farnbrough 05?. Hardly in a rush if the aircraft wont enter service until 2013 or 2014.

Well its like this. QR can either
1. Stick to the commitment and order A350s.
2. Order 787s instead, bearing in mind that they originally canceled their commitment to the 787 in favour of a plane that was inferior to what Airbus now has.
3. order A340s or 777s instead.

....They have done neither 2 or 3.

I'd like to see IB ordering a combo of 747-8I/787.

The 747-8I will be complementary for the A346 fleet and the 787's could replace the oldest A343's. Both aircraft will have the new GEnx engine.

I know this scenario is nearly like a dream as IB is a loyal Airbus customer.

I don't see IB ordering new planes in 2007.

There are rumors saying, anyway, they will purchase two or three more A346's, necessary to add more frequency to the current ops.

Cant see Iberia ordering 747s again. Would be very big to replace the A343s, maybe they will be more interested in the A350 for that. Dont think they will be ordering A380s soon either.

Anyhow, It's pretty unlikely as I see more realist IB ordering A350XWB to replace the oldest A343's and ordering, if need be, more A346 instead 747-8I or 777-300ER.

But ...Who knows!

Isn't BA about to order planes to replace their B-747-400s, B-767-300ERs, and older B-777-200/ERs (including the 5 non ERs they have)?

They could order 20 B-747-800Is, for some of the B-747-400s, deliveries begining in 2010.

Order the B-787-900 for the B-767-300ERs, for deliveries beginning in 2012-2013.

Order the B-777-300ER for the rest of the B-747-400 replacements, beginning in 2010.

Order the B-777-200LR to replace the early B-777-200/ER, beginning in 2012.

I would also expect an order in late 2007 from UA for both the B-747-800I and B-787-800/900 to replace the B-747-400s and B-767-300ERs, for delivery in 2012 and beyond.

I can see DL ordering the B-787-300 to replace their non ER B-767-300s. AA will also order the B-787-300 to begin replacing their A-300-600Rs. Both of these could come in 2007.

Seriously though UA and AA must surely have to think very seriously about ordering some frames this year, particularly if they are thinking of ordering the 787.........otherwise they will not be seeing them in their respective fleets until about 2014/15!!

How about most significant order of the year.

The 2 that stick out to me are EK and BA. Both will be big and both will be very significant for the A350(both EK/BA) and A380(BA). Airbus simply has to get new A380 customers this year; preferably blue-chip ones like BA. They also have to get some significant A350-XWB orders. If not, the 787 will run away in this segment.
That being said, I favour split orders at both EK/BA.

The 2 that stick out to me are EK and BA.

BA sounds very significant indeed. Up to 135 widebodies! This wil be one of the hardest fought over deals. I do hope that there's a bit more exciting news on the order front in 2007, then just EK's widebody order...

Isn't BA about to order planes to replace their B-747-400s, B-767-300ERs, and older B-777-200/ERs (including the 5 non ERs they have)?

Yes, as far as I know the plan is to replace these fleets from 2012 onwards. Either 777s or A330s to be ordered in the meantime, but these wont be interm aircraft, they will be used to expand the fleet.

Ok, lets rewind. I was originally replying to your comment that the airline has ordered 20 777s. Thats right, but they were never ordered as an alternative to the A350 commitment, and are a seperate order as such. So the A350 commitment remains intact. So as things stand, the airline plans to aquire both types.

Big orders for 2007 would have to start with the USA airlines. AA needs to dump the MD-80's fast, they have 300, Boeing should make them a nice deal for 737's. Also AA needs 787 to replace all those long in tooth A300 and 767's. Delta needs to replace all the 763ER's in the fleet and more 777's. United is in a similar situation. British Airways needs planes too, they will be one to watch as Walsh was a big Airbus buyer at Aer Lingus.

Already happened. Spirit ordered 30 A32S this month.  Wink

Which gets me thinking, is the 737 really what AA should be replacing the ENTIRE MD80 fleet with? What about the other options, E-195 or even new V2500 engines as discussed recently.

Honestly I dont think this will have influence on a BA order. Walsh may like Airbus but he will order what is best for BAs situation.

Which brings me to that never before discussed topic, NW DC9s  Smile

IB is already getting two ex NM A332's

So your thinking that they will order the 787 over the A350?

Quoting UAL777UK (Reply 33):
otherwise they will not be seeing them in their respective fleets until about 2014/15!!

Yeah in order to stay competitive I would agree.

No. When replacing a fleet of 300 aircraft, the few dozen 738s AA currently operate will hardly be the dealbreaker (ie. fleet commonality). If AA had to choose between current available aircraft and the order would indeed be for such a huge number of aircraft, the lowest offer will win. They owe that to their shareholders.
