There is speculation that AA may begin flying to Kuala Lumpur too - perhaps as an extension from HKG. THis is all purely speculative. AA is also thinking of code-sharing with MAS. This is related to reports that MAS is close to joining oneWorld (which includes BA, CX and QF)...

..interesting as MAS and Northwest have already applied to the US DoT for anti-trust immunity to code-share on many KUL-USA routes, as well as domestic US and domestic Malaysian routes. Northwest is hoping to extend this agreement to begin services to Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam from Kuala Lumpur.

Once SJC's runway is properly extended, it's possible that AA could fly the 777-200ER on the SJC-HKG non-stop flight, with connections at SJC to ORD and DFW hubs.

SJC wont be fully done until 2015, and the main departure runway, 30L will remain untouched. I do not know if 30R will be used for departing planes. I believe the runway expansion will be complete in 2002, or 2003.

AA did a route proving flight a few months ago with N777AN from DFW to HKG. At that time they had a provisional start-up date in September for the route, although I have heard January mentionned as well.

Not sure when it will happen, be rest assured, it will happen.

Didn't that plane fly from ORD to HKG, using the Polar 2 route?

I believe that UA is the only airline to operate that route, (ord-hkg) and it is with the 744...and even then they are pushing the limits....the passengers are literally surrounded by fuel tanks in the fuselage, and in the rudder there is one also...so if a 744 cant do it very well, a 777 just cant...

I too seem to remember a "proving" flight for AA. I think it was ORD-HKG, over the pole, and returned to DFW from HKG. It was an AA 777.
