Xian MA60 / ATR 72 Comparative Study

Sat Jan 27, 2007 5:36 pm

Hello. I am working on a professional case study for a Chinese language degree. I've decided to look at the CULTURAL aspects in the apparent failure of the Xian MA60 60 seat passenger aircraft to make worthy inroads into western aviation - the preference being for the ATR 72 in this market.
I would welcome comments or suggestions, experiences and other insights from people that would put an additional slant on the perceptions.
The report will be written in Chinese, so if you speak it and would like a copy afterwards, I will gladly forward.
Many thanks. Morgan.

hey morgan,

i'd say that the ma60's biggest failure is that it is pretty much a copy of the an24 series (which was designed pretty much exclusively for soviet markets), whereas the atr72, though a relatively old and conservative design, has been continuously updated throughout its history and has proven itself as an excellent performer.

another problem, which i think is the case with air zimbabwe (who bought 3 ma60s), is that xian's after-sales support is far from satisfactory - so bad, in fact, that they have had to cannibalise one aircraft to keep the other two flying.

if you search in the photo database for this type, you will find more information, likewise also on wikipedia.

all the best with the project!

Nothing to add except that I flew aboard a Lao Aviation MA60 routing VTE-LPQ. I found it to be pretty good: comfortable and not too noisy.

That's because the Ma60 is a licensed remaking of the An24.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

IIRC, it has western engines (PW127) with new props, new avionics, it is also slightly larger.
Exceptions confirm the rule.
