I don't have the exact date but it was about two years ago. The last VS B742 flights were, if I recall, the "leisure" routes from MCO (to MAN and LGW), as these aircraft were leased Air Atlanta planes. Now these flights are on B744 equipment (although still leased a/c???) and I know that they differ slightly from Virgin's own B744 fleet in terms of seating and IFE.

The 747-200 Air Atlanta plane(s) were last on the MAN-MCO route. LGW-MCO switched to the 747-400 in 2001

No, the planes are definitely VS ones. They're a little bit different inside because it was an order for Alitalia that VS took over. The interiors will be pretty much strandardised in the next year or so.

Why did they retire them? Are they really that old?

Wish they have more large planes and can fly them to HKG and SYD.

What's up with HKG-SYD now? Doing well?

Thanks for the clarification.
I flew MCO-MAN last year and the B744 did not have AVOD PTVs, for example. I believe they do on the LHR routes. Not that I really minded - I was able to sleep!

I think all of the last ones were ex CX and NZ delivered from 1980/82 so getting up there in terms of age for a pax aircraft on long haul. And expensive compared to a 744 and 346 on fuel.

They leased the 742's back for a couple of years until 2005 I think it was.
