Dan Air London & PanAm (TXL, 80s)

Mon Jan 29, 2007 11:39 am

Hello everyone...

I would like to know which airplanes were operated by Dan Air London and Pan Am on some specific routes in the 80s, perhaps someone out there can help me.

So here i go,
which airplane(s) Dan Air London operated on these routes:

- 10/1985 TXL - Gran Canaria (and back)

- 09/1986 TXL - Crete (Kreta)

- 02/1988 TXL - Munich (and back)
- 02/1988 Munich - Hurghada, Egypt (and back)

and which airplane(s) Pan Am operated on these routes:

- 10/1987 TXL - Frankfurt (and back)

- 11/1988 TXL - Frankfurt (and back)

- 10/1989 TXL - Frankfurt (and back)

- 03/1990 TXL - Munich (and back)

- 07/1991 TXL - Hamburg (and back)

I found these information about Dan Air on Wikipedia:

Quote:
Dan-Air established its first overseas base at Tegel Airport in West Berlin, Germany, in 1969. [4] (Up to five of the company's aircraft used to be stationed there for over two decades. These initially comprised De Havilland Comets, BAC 1-11s, Boeing 707s and Boeing 727s. They were later replaced with Boeing 737s, Hawker Siddeley 748s and BAe 146s because they were better suited to the requirements of that market. The Berlin-based fleet operated both charter services under contract to German tour operators as well scheduled services to Amsterdam, London Gatwick and Saarbrücken. The Berlin operation was staffed by about 150, mainly local, employees and handled well over 300,000 passengers annually at its peak during the late 1970s and early '80s.)
Dan-Air incidentally operated the first commercial flight to arrive at Tegel Airport's then brand-new terminal building on November 1, 1974 at 6.00 a.m. local time with a BAC 1-11 that was in-bound from Tenerife.

I also know Pan Am used in Germany the B737, the B727 and the A310, but i don't have any specific information about the TXL-routes.

I hope someone can help, thanks...

In '87 or '88 I took a subload day trip to TXL from LHR - outbound on BA LHR-HAJ-TXL 737-236.

As the return flights were pretty full, I had a back-up ticket for PA TXL-FRA and then on from FRA-LHR on BA (believe the evening service from FRA was a TriStar at that time IIRC)

My OAG Flightguide specified the PA service TXL-FRA would be operated by an A310, which I was very excited to try (I was 16!) but in the event, the BA flights out of TXL back to LHR direct cleared and I returned on a 737.

Don't remember seeing any Dan-Air metal on the ground at TXL, but there was definitely a PA A310, an AF 737 and an Air Berlin 737 (in the American Air Berlin colours!)

OAG showed a mix of equipment on the TXL-FRA runs - 727s too, I believe.

As stated above, PA served TXL with 727-100's, -200's, 737-200's, A310's.

TXL - Gran Canaria would probably have been a B727 (their 737s for the 1985 summer season were under ad-hoc contracts to Thomas Cook, the Comets were then phased out from the fleet and the 1-11 would not have sufficient range to fly TXL-LAP non-stop with a full load).

TXL- Crete would have been a B737

Quoting CARST (Thread starter):

- 02/1988 TXL - Munich (and back)

TXL - Munich - TXL would have been operated by one of Dan-Air's BAe 146s

Hey BCAL thank you very much for your post.

That's the information i needed.

Perhaps someone with the same knowledge about Pan Am in the 80s/90s Germany can help with this, too:

Hey BCAL thank you very much for your post

A pleasure.

I have IM'd you regarding the last remaining flight, Munich to Hurghada, which if I remember correctly was not a regular Dan-Air destination. I have, however, now asked a former Dan-Air pilot who says that both the 737 or the 727 could cover the 3,025 miles between MUC and HRG non-stop with full pay load, both aircraft operated the route but 727s were used more frequently on Dan-Air's West German operations. Sorry, but that is as specific as I can get.
