Which Airlines Still Serve With Metal Knives

Mon Jan 29, 2007 6:41 pm

Last week, I was on All Nippon Airways between Osaka and Hong Kong. When the meal was served, I was very surprised to see metal knife, metal fork, and metal spoon! Same on the way back.

Since Sep 11, most airlines have switched to plastics. Have a couple of question here:

1) Which airlines still serve with metal? (I also got metal knife on Royal Brunei back in 2002)

2) Do some governments require airlines to serve with plastics, or is it entirely the airline's choice?

I've had metal cutlery on Air nostrum, Portugalia (both regional airlines) and Ukraine International. Also on MEA (but that was on business class).

There are at least a couple more, but I can't remember right now.

In India, Indian Airlines as well as Jet Airways were kind enough to give me metal on flights this fall (in Y). Just ordinary knifes, no steak-knifes (as you wouldn't need one in the land of holy cows!), so not dangerous I guess; but who knows, in the mind of a mad terrorist they could maybe do some harm.

My grandma was in the CX First Class lounge (The Wing) last week and for dinner there was a full silver service and then she was about to ask where the knife was and saw this puny little plastic thing.. I mean, isn't this a bit over the top, even the first class lounge won't allow metal knives? Sounds a bit strange to me.

I know Iberia still does (at least in C class). I'm not sure about Y though. I flew IB from JNB to MAD this weekend in C and was enjoying my lovely in-flight cooked piece of beef with a very very blunt Iberia metal knife :P Oh well, at least with metal knives you know you're not get pieces of plastic stuck in the food  Wink I actually think the plastic knives are more dangerous, if you think of it, the metal ones are quite blunt and it's not like you can break them into any special shape whereas the plastic ones you can easily break into a very pointy shape! While they're strengthening security controls in Europe (with the limitations on liquids etc), why don't they just give everyone sandwiches instead of hot meals that way there's no more need for cutlery on planes :P

Cheers,

Kris.

SQ lounges at ICN, HKG, SIN all use metal knifes. Also SQ uses metal knifes.

OZ lounge at ICN uses metal knifes along with their service also. This includes sectors to the US

UA uses plastic everywhere. Including their arrivals lounge in SFO outside the secure area.

I dont know why but I think that all airlines serving asian routes provide metal cutlery on all flights in all classes. I have flown around 10 times since Sep 11 round trip with various airlines from S2 to SQ and all provided metal cutlery

Yes, AF uses metal cutlery in economy to/from the US. I flew AF to PHL this summer and received metal cutlery on both flights.

Aside from the so called "safety" aspect of plastic cutlery, which is cheaper for the airlines? Constantly replacing the plastic or washing the metal cutlery?

It's barmy. An airline metal knife can't pierce a bread roll, let alone a passenger. Besides which, what sort of terrorist would hinge their plot on using the metal knife from the meal service?! The metal fork is a good deal more dangerous!

AA uses metal cutlery on all international flights in first and business class. Domestic first/business are in the process of getting metal back. Coach (all destinations) will remain plastic. AA has been adding metal cutlery back in stages over the past six months. It has taken some time while they await delivery of adequate supplies around the system. On domestic routes, you still may see plastic in first, but that won't be for too much longer.

Does BKK-SYD get plastic too? If so, I guess it's an Aussie regulation/requirement - if not, I guess it's coming from Singapore.

FWIW, Club Europe gets metal too.

BD had no problem with metal in 'the business' MAN-LAS-MAN the other week for me either.

LH and Aua use metal knifes... at least on non-US flights...

Aua uses metal cutlery on all flights on C and Y, whereas whenever ive flown with lufthansa plastic is used in Y and metal in C and F (naturally)

Hope to be of a little use for a change,  sorry

Domestic, and Trans-border

However they have removed the Royal Doulton dinnerware from the Executive Class cabin (in favour of plastic   ).

Oh and btw... per the TSA website, round bladed butter knives (the kind we're talking about being used by the airlines) are ALLOWED in your carry-ons. I know... I carry them on all the time....

I believe the question was simply about which airlines are using them, which aren't?

Yep. This passenger can confirm metal in F. Don't know about Y. (Crosses fingers for next EUA, shudders at upcoming transatlantic Y).

In the end, what can one do with a dull knife that one cannot do with the glass from a shattered bottle, sharpened credit card edge, etc.?

The ban on small carry-on knives (pocket knives, Leathermen, etc.) is a bit silly. What can one do with a knife? Stab someone? That can happen before security.

I had metal silverware/cutlery on my first KLM flight in Y last June. It was great to have that for a change with my pasta, but my expectations quickly went downhill as they served breakfast from a cardboard box before we arrived into AMS.

I passed through security at FRA last week and I was called to have my carry-ons checked, because there was something in my jacket. Then I realised I had forgotten my pocket knife in that jacket. I was ready to say farewell to it, when I was told I could keep it, since that size was now allowed. How could I have missed that? Does someone know when it was allowed again? I have been very careful packing my carry-on bag in the last years ever since my mother had problems because of the tweezers she was taking. I think they were afraid she would torture the pilot by tweezing his eyebrows. I must say I'm very surprised that the some rules are being loosened up a little.

I was frequently flying KLM in 2003 and 2004 and remember they always had metal fork/knife/spoon on non-US-bound flights. I remember being on an AMS-MIA flight (KLM now no longer flies this route) and the difference was we got a metal fork and spoon and a plastic knife.

The plastic cutlery rules (fortunately mostly now gone) were a joke. I've had some plastic knives that were sharper than metal ones. And a smashed wine bottle (or broken glass) is much sharper and deadlier when used as a weapon than the typical metal airline knife.

By the way, KL has recently downgraded to plastic cutlery in what passes for their intra-Europe business class service (Europe Select), but the rest of the meal service has also been downgraded (it now comes in a slightly upscale cardboard box) vs. previous china and metal cutlery.
