Transfering From AA To IB At SJU

Tue Jan 30, 2007 11:52 am

How much time do I need to transfer from an AA flight from Florida to the IB flight to Madrid at San Juan? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Well the gates can be quite far apart, I'd say up to 10-15 minutes walking. But you don't have to leave the secure area. In terms of luggage, my experience with SJU is that anything under an hour is disastrous to get your bags transferred in time, and my experience is based on frequent transfers from AA to American Eagle or vice versa. One would fear transferring to IB might be taking a bit longer even.
I'd say 90 minutes would be a minimum I would feel comfortable with.

Does AA handle IB at SJU? That would help...

They do but Iberia blocks in on a different concourse.

You can call AA and they'll tell you over the phone what a legal connection is at SJU between airlines. Since you don't have to go through customs at SJU when arriving from Florida, it shouldn't be any extreme amount of time.

Yeah, that will delay things some, but in my experience, US carriers are very good about getting bags onto the flights of their international partners that they handle (DL/AF, UA/LH, AA/IB, etc.).

If you walk slow... SJU isn't that big of an airport and all the gates are within the same secure area. IB operates out of the concourse where CO, JetBlue and Spirit are located... its the next concourse over from where the AA gates are.

To be specific, I think it's gate 27 or 28 on that concourse. It's all the way at the end, but that concourse is short anyway.
