BMI (Central Illinois Regional Airport) History

Tue Jan 30, 2007 2:37 pm

I knew that Frontier used to be here but dont know which cities served?? And AA used to have a STL route (currently, only ORD). Any other airlines that used to fly to BMI?

Currently:

AirTran (MCO, ATL)
AA Connection (ORD)
United Express (ORD)
Mesaba (DTW)
Delta Connection (ATL)

I'm sure you probably already know this, but TW had a route, hence the AA STL route.
I almost flew it once, too. I was on AA BOS-ORD-PIA in 1997, but was reaccommodated on TW BOS-STL-PIA due to weather. But then the STL-PIA leg had a mx issue. Two people got to get onto the STL-BMI flight instead, and were then bussed to PIA, but I didn't get to the podium fast enough. Ironic because I had plans to drive down from PIA to STL the next day - could have just stayed there, I guess, but didn't want to spend the money on a rental car. So I just flew up after the mx issue was finally fixed, slept a few hours, and drove right back the next morning.

If I remember correctly it was a DEN-OMA-BMI flight. Then the return the same. I also can remember a few times when F9 had to run DEn-OMA-BMI-IND. I was in the terminal at BMI and they would be on the manual departure boards. What a change that airport has seen with the new terminal.

It would be nice to see some photos of and from the new terminal. I think I have only seen one so far since it opened.

Here are some pictures of the "new" terminal. It is five years old now.

Delta Connection had been running to MCO recently. Not sure if they will come back later or not.

Prior post was correct that F9 was BMI-OMA-DEN. The flights were very poorly timed, with departure around 5:00 am and return around midnight. The airport authority has been trying to get F9 express back for several years, with no avail.

Also, we had BMI-STL with very high frequency back in the TWA days (up to 10 flights a day), and even had BMI-STL with AA up until last year.

We used to have Mesaba to MSP. If I remember right, the routes were MSP-BMI-PIA-MSP along with DTW-BMI-PIA-DTW triangle routes. At some point, they decided best to only do BMI-DTW and PIA-MSP.

Back in the mid 90's we had BMI-BNA on AE. That was a long flight in a J31.
