Eddie Rickenbacker

Fri Feb 26, 1999 8:18 am

My brother, as you may remember him as Jake on the forum, has been un-able to get to this site. So he told me to ask you this. He is 13, and his Bar Mitzva is right around the corner. As you all may know, the USPostal service has deleted all its old stamps when they changed to 33 cents a peice. They only have little girlie 55 cents, which the invitations weigh, so he went to the only 60 cents, an aviation stamp, PERFECT! Because thats his favorite this, planes, just like me. But on the top it says "Eddie Rickenbacker, Aviation Pioneer", who is he? What did he do to become a pioneer? Thank-you in advance. Answers are appreciated at or on the forum. Adios.

If I remember right he was the top scoring American Air ace in WWI. I can't remember the number of kills he had. After the war he was probably the most famous pilot in the states until Lindberg. After the war he ended up running American (or TWA I can't remember which).

There are a lot of site references to him that go into great detail.

Thanks for the good name of the airline. I coulnd't remember which one except that it was one of the companies that didn't paint their birds. Which in the 1940/50 dosn't narrow the list down by a lot
