Wheels Out

Hi there,

I was in EWR Monday, leaving for CPH. While waiting to board my own plane I was watching some of the many planes taking off.
During this I watched a NWA A330 take off. What struck me was that it was not retracting its gear... I watched the plane for a long, for longer than 60 seconds, and it still didn't retract the gear. And it didn't return to the airport. Now is that normal procedure for NWA to spend money in this way? I mean having the gear out must create some kind of drag... Or is it a way to keep speed down so that it won't catch up with the slower moving Boeing...  Wink Just kidding... No need for reprisal...  Smile

Any I idea why the gears were down for that long?

Hi Denmark!
If you had read some of the previous topics in this forum, mainly in Tech/Ops.
you might also think about cooling the brakes to avoid heat transfer to the tires. Wink

At Times The Landing Gear is left Extended Delibertly by the Crew to assist in quick cooling of warm brakes from the Previous Landing which did not get enough Cooling time of the Ground.
As mentioned a Search will find a few posts on this topic in more detail.

I've had that happen to me flying LAS-MSP on an A320 - capt left the gear down for approx 5 mins after dept to let the brakes cool down.

Why are the brakes that hot after takeoff? I mean, you use the brakes taxiing, but that shouldn't heat them up enough to necessitate cooling. Also, if you hold the brakes when spoolnig the engines up this will NOT heat them up, as there is no friction.

It's no coincidence that this thread only mentions Airbus aircraft having this issue . . .

I have seen it done many times with Boeing and Douglas aircraft as well in the past, so not sure it is simply an Airbus issue.

Remember sometimes long taxiing can heat the Tyres not brakes.

I'm not saying it has only ever happened on Airbuses, that would be incredulous.

True, that is possible, expecially depending on load, location, and conditions.
