Bomb threat delays jet
By TOM GODFREY, TORONTO SUN

A Toronto-area man is in jail on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts and another is being sought for questioning after a bomb threat was made against a Skyservice jet, allegedly to delay it so the two men wouldn't miss the flight.

The plane, which was travelling from St. Kitts to Toronto via Antigua with 200 passengers, was delayed for three hours on Monday on the runway of the Robert Bradshaw International Airport as dogs and dozens of cops searched for explosives, Royal St. Kitts and Nevis police said yesterday.

"It took a lot of time to clear and search the entire aircraft," St. Kitts police commissioner Robert Jeffers said. "Eight different agencies were involved in this emergency."

Markus Smith, of Toronto, was slated to appear before a magistrate court in Basseterre yesterday. He is facing a $1,000 fine or a jail term, Jeffers said, but will likely be deported from the island.

Another man, identified as Imitaz Khan, of Toronto, who was travelling with Smith and left the island on another flight, is sought for questioning.

The RCMP will be asked to interview Khan and inspect his belongings when he returns to Canada, Jeffers said.

Some eons ago, our early evening MIA-LGA flight at Air Florida had a threat called in. We (Dispatch) called both the ticket counter and gate counter to let us know if anyone tried to check in late for it. Sure enough, about :30 after scheduled departure, a guy from FLL casually walks up and asks if 723 has left yet. Obviously, it was still there getting checked out, and the guy got his boarding pass. Airport police questioned him but were unable to prove anything. I heard from one of the agents that she could tell by the look on his face that he'd done it, but of course that and .50 would get you a cup of coffee back then.

Today, with all the post-9/11 secuity and other stuff like caller ID, you'd think people would know better than to even try this kind of stunt...

A few years ago I read a story about a guy who pulled a similar stunt, except that he got arrested for it. I can't remember the exact details, but it's something like this:

A businessman (let's call him "Mr Dimetrios") knew he was going to be late for his ATH-FRA flight. So he calls the airline, tells them "there's a bomb on your ATH-FRA flight", and then sure enough when he finally gets to the airport the flight is being delayed for a security check.

Why did he get arrested? Well, like a lot of businesspeople, he didnt call the airline himself. He told his secretary to call. She calls, and tells the airline "please hold......Mr Dimetrios would like to speak with you". He then gets on, mentions the threat, and heads out to the airport.
