South FL Airport '06 Traffic: MIA Up; FLL,PBI Down

Thu Feb 01, 2007 9:56 am

The 2006 numbers for airports have started rolling in, and the final tally for South Florida's airports, for the first time in a long time, shows Miami up, while the other two airlines are down.

Largely thanks to a significant increase in American Airlines flights, traffic at MIA was up a healthy 4.92%, or approximately 1.5M passengers, to 32.53M.

Traffic at Fort Lauderdale was down, largely due to the reduction of Delta Connection flights and the closing of focus cities by AA and US. Traffic declined 4.6%, roughly 1M, to 21.4M passengers.

At West Palm Beach traffic only fell slightly by 2.8% (.18M passengers) to 6.8M.

Overall, South Florida's airports carried roughly 60.7M passengers in 2006.

Something tells me this isn't the whole story. Certainly the negative publicity the airport's been receiving in the last year with regard to delays has been a big turnoff for O&D (particularly the O)...

There was a lot of bad publicity early in 2006, but it cooled down. Delta Airlines and US Airways heavily slashed service at FLL with US Airways ending all point-to-point flying except Key West and Delta ending more than a dozen Delta Connection routes. American Airlines went from almost 40 dailies to about 22-24.

I really doubt the negative publicity had a significant effect. What had more of an effect is that AA's new pricing out of MIA has significantly increased their domestic O&D by more than 20% since being implemented, and more people are finding fares at MIA to be more competitive and not driving to FLL.
