CO Fleet Planning

After booking a trip, I spent some time perusing the CO timetables, and I'm a bit curious about how different 737 models are allocated to different routes. I'm not talking about models with different capacity - obviously a 738 will go on a route if a 733/73G consistently goes out oversold. What I am talking about, is the 733 vs. 73G.

For example, all of CO's IAH-DCA frequencies are operated with the 73G. However, all of the IAH-BOS flights are 733. Both models have the same capacity, within 2-3 seats anyway. I have flown both of these routes, and while having the 73G for the 2.5 hr flight to DCA was great, I feel that the added amenities and IFE in the 73G would be more appropriate for the 4 hour haul to Boston.

Are there differences in the premium cabins on these aircraft- for example, does the 73G have more F seats, and does the DCA route have more demand for upgrades and F seats?

Capacity:
CO 733- 12/112
CO 73G- 12/112

IFE
CO 733- 14 aircraft have CRTs over center aisle. This style of IFE is being removed and will leave all CO 733s without IFE.
CO 73G- All aircraft have LCDs that drop down every few rows

Seats
CO 733 - Standard CO domestic FC seat (leather with winged headrest and lumbar adjust) Main Cabin seats are the older style (no winged headrest)
CO 73G- Standard CO domestic FC seat (leather with winged headrest and lumbar adjust) Main Cabin seats are newer (winged headrest) but not the newest seats that are found on some 757s (the ones that the seat cushion slides too).

The 737-700 has a longer range too. It does CLE-LAX,SFO which is pushing it for a 737-300.

Yeah, the classic 737's don't really have the legs for transcons. If I'm not mistaken, this is one of the main reasons why NW, US and UA went for the A320, as Boeing could only offer the 733, 734 and 735 to compete which didn't have the legs for certain routes.

However, in cases like IAH-BOS vs. IAH-DCA, why is it that the DCA flight gets all 73G's, while BOS is all 733? Both aircraft have the same capacity, and both have the range for both flights, so I'm surprised there's not more of a mix. I guess I'm just a bit surprised that the newer aircraft with IFE and better seats wouldn't go to the longer flight.

This is due to the much better runway performance of the 737-700. Especially when departing runway 1 in DCA, the 737-700 can carry more load to IAH, where as the 737-300 would suffer some weight "hits" thus reducing the revenue.

It is indeed a long haul in the 737-300 from BOS to IAH and the take off (from BOS) is often a max performance effort with the engine bleed air turned off (the APU supplies the cabin air in the initial climb) and quite high runway V-speeds.

It would be great if we had enough -700s to go around at CO, but I don't expect the company to take delivery of any more.

Eventhough we flew them IAD-LAX, EWR-SJC, EWR-SNA, EWR-SAN years ago. We thought we were hot s*** going transcon, serving and carving chateaubriand in the aisle off a tiered cart on those things too.  Big grin

Also, the 73G takes more gate space compared to the classics. BOS might be tight spacing where CO parks. Just speculation, though.

IAH-West Coast is starting to see some rationalization with the NG fleet...not that many classics flying west anymore.

Ahh, did not know about the runway differences. The 73G can be a little rocket on the takeoff roll, a very fun aircraft to fly. I think that CO's remaining 737NG orders are all for the -800 and -900ER.
