BMI To Announce LHR-Pakistan Flights?

Sat Feb 03, 2007 12:42 am

According to this website forum :

http://www.historyofpia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7784

a member states that an employee of BMI-British Midland has informed him that the airline will be making a major announcement soon concerning its new long haul daily flights to Pakistan from Heathrow.

It will be flown by the same A 332 that was used for the BOM route.

BMI has decided on 4 weekly LHR-Islamabad and 3 weekly LHR-Lahore flights.

but the aunties and uncles will still be loyal to PK..and with the new B777's in the fleet, the planes and service are very good so I expect most of the "youngens" to stick with PK...but you are right, some will be persuaded to fly with BD... Smile

...that being said, I would like to see BA start KHI service....

BMI has been talking about longhaul expansion for awhile. Weren't they thinking about expanding into HKG as well? If they did, I don't think it's a good idea now as there are 10 daily flights ex-LHR and one from LGW to HKG.

..true, true...but PK is quite cheap as it is...knowing the aunties and uncles, they will fly the BD "promotional fares" and rave about how much better BD is better than PK, then once BD raises its fares, they will go back to PK and harp how bad BD was....Pakistani-style.... biggrin

There was rumour of BMed looking at Pakistan flights. Now BMed are bmi, could this measn A320/A321 flights to Pakistan instead of A330 service

Anyway, were would the A330 come from? One is meant to be going on lease to Virgin Nigeria soon

The A330 now on lease is G-WWBD which was in Star Alliance c/s prior to the repainting/restickering

The A330 which was pulled off the BOM route last year was G-WWBM.

Bunch of bafoons running BD..instead of trying to compete with a million carriers out of LHR, BD should lease some of those precious slots it has (what is it, 14%?), lease and/or purchase some twins and take control of MAN...MAN-ORD is very successful..they can practically monopolise that entire catchment area and offer services everywhere from there...not only that, if given the opportunity, many people will avoid LHR like the plague....

That was allocated to operate the Saudi routes from S07-long before the hard landing, and long before BOM was finally dropped. Bmi have a habit of scheduling more aircraft than they have A330's for.

Maybe Nottingham City Council will give Aero Asia a grant to pave the runway long enough to land their 332 there  Smile

Nothing would surprise me these days, there's regional airport popping up all over the place in the UK.

Not sure whether EMA flights would work, there isnt a high popualtion of pakistani people in that region, further north is the hotspost.

Im an LBA man I know, but an LBA-Pakistan flight would be a gold mine, might ruin MAN though.

I think that there might be a runway issue with LBA. I doubt the terminal could cope either.

I think that DSA would have a runway longenough, but Im not 100% on that.

Either way BMI needs to sort out its network. The whole thing is a bloody mess.
Next flights: MAN-ORK-LHR(EI)-MAN(BD); MAN-LHR(BD)-ORK (EI); DUB-ZRH-LAX (LX) LAX-YYZ (AC) YYZ-YHZ-LHR(AC)-DUB(BD)

LBA could handle anyhting from Saabs to 747's, its had concorde before. Terminal could be an issue, but Id park it on a remote stand and bus it in. That said, the stands can handle up to 767 AFAIK, BY use them on charter services every so often.

As for DSA, anyone who watched the BBC program "Should we fly" or something along those lines know that no residents would ever let a PIA 743 in Big grin, smashed windows galore

Introducing new long-haul routes at the expense of others could hardly be described as expansion.

one should seriously take Shaheen Air and Aero Asia's UK expansion plans with a grain of salt as both these airlines in the past too have on numerous occassions accounced similar plans which never materialized.

therefore until their first flight leaves PAK for UK, no should take their announcements seriously at all.

Nevertheless, if this is proved to be true, it is a brilliant, well thought of move by BMI as due to them being Star Alliance members, they will also get a lot of trans-atlantic feeder traffic from their codeshare partner airlines i.e. United and Air Canada from North America.

I would bet on these flights being profitable within a year's time compared to BOM because of less intensive competition on the LHR-BOM route compared to LHR-Northern Pakistan. The only direct threat that BMI faces comes from PIA.

It was best that they chose Northern Pakistan over daily LHR-KHI flights because yield and profit making potential is higher for Northern Pakistan-UK routes than LHR-KHI.

BMED as it was, was planning to start London-Yerevan-Lahore flights 4 times a week, but with the bmi buyout, I'm not sure what is happening.

Its pretty similar to ORK @ LBA, so although the aircraft can get in and out when the're pretty light, but not with a decent payload to the likes of the west coast of the US, DXB, etc.
