Excellent News! Does this mean they will become a full fledged member? It seems so as I read it, but then again my spanish is not the best.

No, just associate member.
Still, nit unlikely then, that AF or KL will start flights to PTY. That would really be an useful link for people going from anywhere in Europe and the Middle East to Central America.

They are still on track to join as Associate Member. Same with Air Europa and Kenya Airways. There is a thread in here containing a link to the press release. It is funny to note that there is nothing about Tarom. Seems they won't be joining at all.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Right now, AF,KL, LH, BA and the like can't compete with DL's pricing from Europe to Central America. They are kicking everyones *sses on those routes.

Competition is good. Not everybody will go for the price though, plus there are many others who will avoid flying through the US, eithr because a transit visa is required, or they simply don't like the security hassles.

CO bought a 49% investment in Copa 1998 and started their marketing/codesharing agreement with them (hence the logo similarities, President's Club in PTY, OnePass, etc.). A few years ago (late 2005?) Copa made an IPO on the NYSE and afterwards CO started liquidating their investment with them to shore up their own cash position.

Today CO and CM are still involved in their marketing agreement and I have not heard (and please, take that with a grain of salt) any talk of reducing this.

FYI… for all you NW/CO elites, CM is rumored to be an easy EUA. Sure they might only fly 737’s and EMB’s…but first class on a 737 to EZE beats being stuck in coach on a widebody any day!

Back in the late 1990s CO bought a Controlling 49% stake in CM, in 2005 when CM went public CO sold about 28% of the airline in the market, they have contiuned to sell to cover their pension fund. CM is today 49% owned by Motta International of Panama, 12% by CO and the rest is publicaly traded.

All in all buying CM turned out to be a great investment by CO.

Good for them. It doesn't surprise me at all due to their close realtionship with all of the SkyTeam airlines already. Being a NW/CO guy myself this is really good news!

OK, my Spanish isn't that great, but doesn't the article simply say that COPA will become a member of SkyTeam? What is new here? Is there a date that this takes place? Otherwise, it is the same announcement made back in June 2005.

The papers were signed today, so it is now officially being processed. That is the news, it is different because the announcement in June was about their intent to join, after a lot of running around they are finally joining today.

Great news for my Screennames' namesake carrier. Copa is a classy airline, and its nice to see them get into a good alliance like Skyteam.

Very good for Copa, but do this mean that Aerorepublica, that its owned by Copa will be part of the alliance as an associate? This will be excellent news also for Colombian passengers .

I told you that CM will be part of an alliance first than AV.

Good for CM and for P5.

Here's something interesting that I just thought about... RG was just "kicked out" of Star. Three days later CM starts the paperwork to join SkyTeam. So now SkyTeam is one up on Star in the Latin American department.

Well, Star is virtually absent from Latin America. The word is that it is in talks with both Aerolineas Argentinas and Avianca about them joining. Between the two they would provide a fair coverage of South America, and importantly, with the expected new links to Europe by AV (FRA in particular) the network across the south atlantic would be significantly improved.

Exactly, and finally makes up for its lack of LatAm network as opposed to One World.

Although new options for SkyTeam travel are always welcome, there are really not a lot of new destinations that will be added by COPA that are not already available via DL, CO, AM and AV codeshares.
