Light Plane Missing Off UK Coast

Sun Feb 04, 2007 4:11 am

All,

Had a browse through the latest discussions, couldn't see anything.

"A major rescue mission is underway after a light aircraft went missing off the coast near Blackpool..."

Fingers crossed for all.

Light Plane Missing Off UK Coast

Sun Feb 04, 2007 4:22 am

I had my first flying lesson from Blackpool last week in a PA28-140 (G-BBEF). I hope both crew are found safe and sound. The fog started to roll in about 3.30 around here so fingers crossed for them.

The fog must be bad as 99% of flights ex LPL after 18.00 have been cancelled.

Correct, unfortunately.

From Ryanair.com:

Due to severe fog and restricted visibility at Liverpool airport a number of departures and arrivals have been cancelled this morning. As a result of ongoing weather conditions (fog) at Liverpool Airport, this has resulted in the cancellation of Ryanair's schedule for today.

The latest weather forecast for tomorrow is predicting a continuation of these foggy conditions. Consequently it is likely that some of tomorrows early morning flights will be cancelled.

I'm only 15 miles as the crow flies from Blackpool Airport and the visibility here is under 100m as I type. Its bad enough driving let alone flying at the moment. Lets hope they are found alive and well but it doesn't sound promising.  crossfingers

Sky News Update:

Lancashire Police said the two men believed to have died in the aircraft crash were from the Fylde area of Lancashire.

Inspector Mark Hindle said: "We, of course, are in the early stages of looking into just how this tragedy came about and it is far too early to speculate how it happened.

"The Air Accident Investigating Branch has been informed and they will be taking over the investigation."

This is tragic news, if it becomes confirmed two lives have been lost.

Likewise. Latest from BBC is not good news unfortunately.

Two bodies have been found by the recovery team searching for the occupants of a light aircraft which crashed off the Lancashire coast.
Police said the bodies were found in the fuselage of the plane, which crashed off the Fylde coast near Blackpool on Saturday night ... Lancashire Police said the wreckage was recovered early on Sunday morning off South Shore by a team of coastguards, police and council workers.

The bodies were found in the wreckage, but the victims have not yet been officially named by police

That's very sad news indeed. Thoughts to the families involved. I'm going to have to stop photographing at BLK, that's the second aircraft lost in the last 6 weeks that I have in my archive.

I've just realised, I have a friend who flew OXF for EGTB yesterday afternoon on a light aircraft (not sure of specifics, but he's training).

This route wouldn't take him anywhere near here, would it?!

He's not picking up so I'm obviously slightly paranoid.

I beleive the aircraft left BLK early Saturday morning, destination Exeter acting as a crew ferry flight before returning to BLK in the afternoon (source Blackpool Spotters).
