XL.com (Miami Air) 738 At RIC Sat. Nite

Sun Feb 04, 2007 10:34 am

Just returned from having a Sam Adam's Winter Lager at the Applebee's at RIC. When we left to come home, we passed through the Executive Terminal Avitat where we noticed a Miami Air 737-800 in XL.com colors pull up for fuel. The Avitat guys rolled up a staircase to the plane and a couple people hopped off.

I'm curious what's the deal with this flight. According to FlightAware, the flight came in from Toronto. Sorry - no pix, I didn't have my camera and it was night already.

Thanks for any info...

Seems that this plane (if we are talking about the same plane, cn 29052/557) was operated by Miami Air once before in the past, with the old Excel colors. It then went back to Excel Airways, got painted in the new XL colors, and is now back with Miami Air as N906MA. Pretty confusing.

It made an appearance in HNL about a week ago. There's a Miami Air logo on the nosewheel door.

Just an extra plane for the busy winter season charters.

Why would XL lease a plane in their new colours. Surely it would make sense to have leased an an aircraft still in old c/s.

Thanks for the responses...

Of the photos above, the plane I saw was in the scheme shown on the bottom. A very attractive scheme at that!

Any idea what charter this plane was running?

I'm sure the current paint scheme makes no difference to either carrier, for excel it keeps the plane from sitting around not making money. It also is providing much needed lift for the busy winter charters for Miami Air.She sure does get around, I caught it in BWI last week.

I may be way off here, but it may be because Miami Air have had this aircraft before. Perhaps its easier to lease them the same aircraft again due to it already previously wearing an N registration?

I was about to start a thread asking why 3 Miami Air 738s arrived at YYZ from Miami on Saturday afternoon. The only thing I could think of was Super Bowl related charters, but in view of the stop in RIC, perhaps not. I didn't see any of these planes myself, so don"t know the registrations.
