SWF: Will WN Be Watching B6 &FL Carefully?

Mon Feb 05, 2007 3:25 am

WN has for years ignored SWF as a 2nd gateway into the NYC market. Now that B6 and FL have descended into SWF, will be WN be watching closely?

And I guess a broader question is: how does an airline moniter another airline's pax counts/yields? Or is that public information, at least the pax counts.

Southwest has been rumoured to be looking at SWF and apparently is on their agenda for 2007.

Is SWF or ISP closer to the city? Which one is more easily/quickly accessed from the city? I've been told by family that lives there not to fly WN because ISP is a pain to get to. Is that true?

I believe WN flies to ISP due to the fact that Long Island has a large enough O & D population that they don't need a large per centage of NYC traffic to make money...it depends on which borough you live in to determine which airport is closer, SWF would be easier for the Bronx...Queens and Brooklyn would be ISP, Staten Island and Manhattan ??? toss up I guess; frankly neither one is "close" to the 5 boros...

I'm sure they will be keeping an eye on how the loads are, but it will still likely be a while before they seriously begin to thing about inaugurating service.

I'm still wondering if WN won't just bite the bullet and add JFK.... the airport which to this day, serves as a perpetual reminder that even WN can seriously drop the ball  Wink

While reading this...I can hear the ATC planning telcon going on in the background...talking about the daily JFK and LGA ground stops and delay programs. I wouldn't say WN dropped the ball on JFK.

AA used to pay a little bit under the table to the door guards sitting across from FL's gates in DFW to count pax stepping into/out of the jetway doors when FL was running DFW-LAX service.

Gary Kelly has said that WN needs to get into the New York City market and that ISP's market is not New York City, it is Long Island. He further said that to serve New York City WN needs to be in LGA, but that there are no slots or gates available. So from what Gary said I expect that WN will try to get into LGA before SWF.

SWF between 55-65 miles from Manhattan, ISP is about 40-45 miles.

I think WN tried the alternative airport strategy but now are going right into the markets they want, Philadelphia being the main example. If they could put up with the delays at PHL they can put up with the delays at EWR, JFK and LGA.

Dunno about LGA, but SWF has been sitting there for almost 20 years and WN had ample opportunity to enter that market and has so far left it to others.

A little bit off the topic. But does anyone else think that B6 wanted HPN more than SWF but was forced to make the move to SWF when FL came here and the Southwest rumors are always swirling around?

I think jet Blue wanted SWF more since talks had been going on for a long time and they have a more promising future at SWF since there is room for expansion (in terms of airport expansion), unlike HPN.

If jet Blue wanted HPN more then SWF they should have thought the other way since it seems like jet Blue is doing much better at SWF then Air Tran is.

As for the Southwest rumors they have been swirling but apparently the airport is set for their agenda for 2007.

Honestly I think SWF is a better alternative than ISP. Although ISP is technically closer to NYC, a trip to SWF has much less traffic. In addition, SWF appeals to the North Jersey population, which is huge-. ISP is 2 hours from North Jersey as well as PHL, while SWF is only about 1 hour. I think if SW is hesitant in entering NYC they should definitely look into SWF or ABE.
