Virgin Atlantic's Boys Talking Dirty

Mon Feb 05, 2007 9:43 am

as i was reading the Feb. '07 issue of Airways magazine i'm looking through the "Debrief" section. Found a rather hilarious story i thought i'd share. did a search and didn't see anything related to it. here it is...

~B6FA4ever
================
"Little Boys Talking Dirty"
Attempting to maintain an edge in the competitive Hong Kong market, Virgin Atlantic Airways emphasizes the 9.5in (24cm)-wide seat-back screens of its IFE (In-Flight Entertainment) system. Unfortunately, the airline chose to go down the adolescent humor path, with ads headlined "Play With Yourself" and "9 Inches of Pleasure". Memo to the 20-something Marketing Virgins: You're so last-century. Winston cigarettes beat you in 1963 with "It's Not How Long You Make It; It's How you Make it Long".

It's exactly the kind of interestingly distasteful advertising that would catch your attention... the kind you would never find on Singapore or United.

But point taken, they could be more tasteful - like the good tobacco folks, and include some taste in the ad.

Your right flydreamliner, you would never find it on UA or SQ but I guess they are a different type of airline. The patrons of UA would try to sue for being 'oh so horrified' by it or something silly like that Wink

Good marketing, shows they are no virgins in that field.

And, as the English say - "Honi soit qui mal y pense".

I remember reading that and chuckling myself. That aside, the add doesn't make me want to fly Virgin anymore then UA or SQ. It's like what Ghost77 said, the add is designed to attract attention and it did just that.

IT's all good until you fly them. I prefer UA, LH, DL, or even BA, yuch, across the water.

Well it comes from America's idiotic horror of their bodies and not accepting that your body is just something that is... Dang those pilgrims with their puritan views on life. The #1 thing in life is to respect your own body.... and the way that the pigrims thought about their bodies.. it was like that it was an icky topic to talk about...  banghead   ashamed   biting   blockhead   boggled   boxedin  Some people just need to get up off their closed-minded ideals and realize that many places in the world are far more open about things like this.

Virgin Atlantic, what's next? Adult magazines on board? Can I apply to be one of Virgin Atlantic's boys and get paid for talking dirty?

I liked the ads Virgin ran in bus shelters when the second Austin Powers movie came out. It was a photo of Austin straddling a gigantic Virgin Atlantic 747 (an obvious phallic symbol) and the tag line read "There's only one Virgin on this poster, baby!"

Not the classiest route, but a bit of tongue-in-cheek, double-entendre humor that only Virgin could get away with.  Smile

I hope they weren't referring to Sir Branson..  Wow!

seems some could take a slogan like that offensive, though.

thats my thoughts exactly. why does the USA have to be so closed-minded when it comes to the body (or anything for that matter). we should get w/ the program like the majority of other countries and actually be human.

i'd explain more about it but i'd probably "offend" some of those people like ORDRyan28 was talking about.

Cheers folks!

Oh the USA is full of open minded relaxed people........

Humour or not at least they are trying to have fun ...unlike the uptight moral high grounders......

What happens when someone does play with themselves on a flight and gets in trouble. Can they claim that Virgin endorsed such behavior in their ads?

Food for thought...  Wink

Good grief. If an American company had used those catch phrases you US-haters would be railing on about how immature and low-brow we are. Damned if we do damned if we don't. You haters will always find something to criticize.

No, but they can claim "The devil made me do it, Huhhh".

It's not US hate when some of us aliens make fun about certain behavior in the US. I mean it is funny when drinking in the public is not allowed but a brown bag covering the booze bottle does the trick.

It is funny, when a marketing slogan, which is tongue in cheek, is subject to a discussion.

Us aliens could say, guys, you have a dirty mind. Now, that is something to laugh about, isn't it? Most of us love the States, it's a wonderful country and good advertising needs slogans like the one we discuss here,

There is nothing wrong about that. Virgin was always good in that, I liked a poster I saw in NY some time ago, showing a hippie making the V sign. It said, in the 70s he knew which airline he would take to London in the 90s.

OK, that ad campaign would probably not have worked in Chicago.

HAHAHA - That is exactly my point. Everyones knows playing with yourself is socially unacceptable but in the US someone would try to blame someone else and also try to profit out of it......

I don't hate America at all. Gosh I went to University there and loved it....I see the paradoxes of America and they make me laugh particulary when plural 'America' is outraged by something so minor yet turn a blind eye when a war is ordered where thousands of innocent people are killed....or where 40 million people have no health care.......that's all I am pointing out...nothing major Wink
