Why anyone would be interested in that trash pit BUR when LAX, SNA, and ONT are nearby, I'll never know.
But to answer your questions, they've done some remodelling in some parts of the terminal, but it's still basically the same one they've always had.
Regarding USAir, they used ex PSA MD-80's and BAe 146's plus occasional 737-300's prior to jumping ship.

In regards to the new terminal going through the short answer is no. The terminal is cought up in Burbank city politics, with the city basically wanting the airport closed. Every time the airport makes a concession its not enough for airport foes. The airport has scaled back plans from a 19 gate facillity to the current 14 gate proposal. Other concessions the airport has given has been to close the terminal building from 2300-0700 hours, effectively creating a night time curfew. But thats still is not enough for the NIBYs in burbank.

Now as fare as why people would want to fly out of that "trash pit" maybe because of its convenient location. Why would I want to drive 40 miles to LAX on the 405 when I can drive 9 miles to BUR?

I was one of Los Angeles County's representatives on the Burbank Airport Part 150 Noise Committee (where the planned and desgined terminal was a regularly visited item)..........in 1986!!!!! That'll tell you how long that things been bandied about regarding the new terminal!!!

Have you ever flown out of there? From a passengers stand point it is very easy and convenient. From an enthusiasts stand point, the airport is awesome. No other airport has gates so close to the runway, by law you can't build them that close any more. I love the takeoffs there too, I flew on AWA once out of there, the pilot held the brakes and ran the power up pretty high before releasing the brakes. We were off the runway in no time, the angle on the climb out was really steep, it was the most exciting airline takeoff I have ever experienced. I also like the stairs opposed to jetways, gives you more of a feel for the size of the aircraft.
