"Pan Am" To Start HVN Service

Tue Feb 06, 2007 10:28 am

Pan Am Clipper Connection will begin service to New Haven from BWI, Bedford, MA, Elmira, NY, Portsmouth, NH on March 8, with their 19 passenger J31's.

http://www.nhregister.com/site/news....=1281&PAG=461&dept_id=590581&rfi=6

They'll be flying only Monday-Friday, with 3x M-F service to BWI, 1x BED, 1x PSM, and 3x ELM.

Any bets on how long the service will last?

It'll last until the subsidies run out.

I'm assuming that New Haven coughed up some sort of incentives for a new entrant.

USAirways Express is the only game in town IIRC

How is that airline doing overall? Whats it like flying on them? It probably the only US airline that still operates 727s for regular scheduled services.

What kind of market is there from Elmira to New Haven?

Interesting also that New Haven doesn't show up on the route map on their web site, but you can book it in their reservation system.

It was on the route map on Monday and Tuesday. It seems it's been taken off. :s

Long enough for Guildford to further screw up the Pan Am name.

I don't think Faux-Am even runs scheduled 727 service at this point, only charter.

I see there is ONE 727 flight Elmira to Sanford on Feb 19, but no return and that is the only flight listed.

I saw one of the pseudo Pan Am 727's on short final into ORD last week. Made me take a double and then a triple take to see the Pan Am colors here again.

The question I have is how large is their fleet???

How on earth do they manage to stay in business? Let alone making a mockery of the PAN AM moniker...

I hope they don't screw up the name anymore than they already have.

The new Pan Am is nothing like her glorious predecessor.

I haven't been to A.net in quite some time now and the first thing I went to search was for any news regarding HVN and I stumbled upon this tastey vittle. I was quite skeptical about this news until I went to the airport website, http://www.flytweed.com, and see for myself. I am actually a bit surprised that PA Clipper Connection wants to commence service out of my hometown. I can see the sense in having the service HVN-BWI and HVN-BED, but I don't see the reason to have a HVN-ELM. Surely, Pan Am has there reasons to begin this market and perhaps they feel they should have a test run.

I kinda miss having DL for that matter, for I thought they were doing well. Maybe, if the service to BWI is successful it may bring in interest from WN.

They are backed by a small but extremely profitable rail company, not to mention charter contracts.

They screwed up that name the moment they bought it.

Are they even running the 727s on scheduled flights anymore?

Quoting Turpentyine (Reply 2):

Actually, the service was good. For what turned out to be such a shoddy operation, they did try hard on their in-flight service. Here's the trip report from my LCK-SFB-LCK trip a couple summers ago, including photos. http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/60423

I just checked www.flypanam.com and they don't show anything about serving HVN. I know when they announced ELM service it was on their route map immediatley.

They must work those J-31's pretty hard.

Has anyone flown them lately?

Wow, I didn't know PA was operating out of ORD. Was it a charter? If it's scheduled service, where to?

I think even casual travelers who flew back in the old Pan Am's glory days know the new incarnation is fake. Isn't this the 2nd Pan Am rip-off since the original ceased operations in '91? I remember another reincarnation of the name in the late '90s with a couple of old A300's.

It is what it is. But even still, the service can't be worse than any other legacy carrier nowadays. I for one am just happy someone is still flying 727's.

Their service is/was better than other legacy carriers today.

Flew them about a year ago SFB-ATL. Very good service, arrived on time, plane was absolutely full.....though mostly with Vacation Express' chump fares.

It isn't about the inflight service, it is about what a sh!t show the whole operation is.

Never liked the 727, though I do like the way the MD-11-esque winglets look on them.

To each their own. I am very fond of classic airliners, and obviously the three-holers.

I agree. Despite the city of New Haven having a decent population, especially considering the immediate shoreline towns to the east and west, and, of course, Yale University, HVN airport is very very small. The terminal makes HPN look spacious, but this is not a problem because there is barely any service these days. The runways are short, hemmed in by NIMBY residents and the geographical boundaries of LI Sound. WN would never run 737s into and out of this place! Besides, you have BDL 40 miles to the north, HPN 40 miles to the west, PVD 90 miles to the east, and of course, the NY airports 80 miles to the southwest (as well as decent Amtrak service up and down the NE corridor).

The best HVN can hope for is RJ service to return, either DL to CVG or ATL (not even sure if they can make ATL from HVN's short runways) or perhaps UA to IAD. I suppose an E70 could fly to DCA or IAD, but HVN has seen nothing but downsizing and service elimination over the last 20 years. Besides the Pan Am train wreck of an airline, there is not much chance of anything significant happening at HVN anytime soon. And I wouldn't call PA's J32 service "significant"....

Spot on observations. The City has doen NOTHING to support air service to its airport.
