A Problem At MAN Today?

Tue Feb 06, 2007 7:40 pm

I'm in Leeds at the moment - just seen three BA Connect aircraft (an Embraer, an Avro and a Dash 8) on approach to LBA. I looked at LBA arrivals (http://www.lbia.co.uk/arrivals.html) and it seems services from SOU, EDI and BRU to MAN have been diverted to LBA.

Is there a problem at MAN?

It is great to see BA back at LBA by the way!
Next flights: LGW-LBA-LGW, LHR-SIN-SYD, SYD-BKK-LHR, LGW-GRO, GRO-CIA, CIA-MAD, MAD-LGW

Very thick fog. From where I'm sitting (next to gate 21) I can't see more than two gates away. One brave LH 737 has made it in during the last half hour but nothing else has landed. Two PIA 777s are holding.

Having driven right round the M60 (Manchester's main ring road) this morning there is no fog anywhere further than half a mile from the airport!

Where is everything else getting diverted to then?

I see another one from EDI and a flight from DUS have also diverted to LBA.

Visibility at MAN was terrible with RVR (Runway Visual Range) down at around 200m this morning and it came in pretty quick! Many aircraft diverted to LBA BHX and a couple to EMA.

But that wasn't the only problem, the airport operates only one runway in low vis procedures and unfortunately this had to be closed for a short time.

This was due to one poor BA Dash-8 who braved the weather and managed to deprt, only to have a hydraulics failure and find he couldn't land back at MAN as the RVR was below the aircrafts minima for landing!! He then diverted to LBA safely and the runway had to inspected, and possibly cleaned as I believe hydraulic fluid was left for around 160 feet on the runway. Things seem to clearing up quite significantly now.
