A. Talks With 2 Possible A380 Buyers In India

Tue Feb 06, 2007 11:00 pm

Apparently Airbus is in pretliminary talks with two possible A380 buyers in India.
There's no further information.

Kingfisher has already placed an order for A380s. Of the remaining Indian carriers who could possible use the A380 best? Jet Airways and Air India?

If it were a private customer, could one or two of the many diamond biljonairs be the potential customer? Are there any large (widebody) private jets owned by Indians?

Quote:
BANGALORE, India (Dow Jones)--Aircraft-maker Airbus is in talks with two Indian airline companies over possible purchases of its jumbo A380 aircraft, Airbus Executive Vice President Kiran Rao said Tuesday.

"The talks are at a preliminary stage," Rao said at a press conference on the sidelines of an air-show in this southern Indian city.

He didn't specify which airlines Airbus is talking to, nor the numbers of aircraft under discussion.

Thank you Leelaw. The article you posted talks about Indian airline companies, I assume that excludes private customers.

I think they are the best bet^^. With the huge forecast growth of air travel in India, both of these carriers will need some VLA's at some point or other.

Very unlikely that any Indian millionaires / billionares (and there are plenty of them now) would buy an A380....to the best of my knowledge, there are no private widebodies in India today.....

Most likely, it would be 9W or AI....although I would prefer to see the 748i in the AI fleet..... smile

Of course, who else? Maybe Air Deccan or IndiGo fly them domestic at some time, but I don't see that happening too soon.

True but when're slots actually available for this bird ?

All of 2007 1 plane
2008 9 planes
2009 25 planes (?)
and 2010 45 planes

are booked up so if they're very lucky they could get some planes in 4 year's time?

Looking at the other Indian airline that already ordered the A380, it could be anyone. It could even be a completely new airline or one of the freighter start ups. Wasn't one of them going to fly fruit, vegetables and other perishables around?

I'd hate to see A380 with Air Deccan, as they don't assign seat and it would be quite a scene watching so many people scrambling over on another to grab best seats.

The likely customers are none other than 9W and AI.

As I understand it, AI does a very strong business on their JFK-LHR-DEL routing, so an A388 might find a home servicing that route.

There was a documentation on ARTE (which is a Frensh/German TV station) about Air Deccan a few months ago. At the end of it they showed John Leahy and Captain G R Gopinath, the Managing Director of Air Deccan, who told Leahy that he thinks that the A380 is the perfect aircraft for Air Deccan. "It is the train of the skies", he said, "it will be able to carry more than 800 passengers and would be ideal for the Indian market ." Leahy of course loved the term "train of the skies" and said that Airbus should use it.

But doesn't he then go on to order an A318 leading to JL turning to the camera and saying with a wry smile that he was trying to sell the largest plane the A built and ended up selling the smallest - but a sale's a sale!

I could see, Jet Airways and Air India ordering some A380s.

Especially with how Jet has been doing on their London routes.

However with this possibility of additional A380s coming to India, comes a problem.

Airport Infrastructure. Will any airports be able to accomodate for it?

I don't think anybody in India has ordered A318. IC has ordered A319 and Air Deccan is all A320. Correct me if I am wrong.

I continue to remain unconvinced on how well an A388 would be on domestic Indian or Chinese service. I understand the benefit of being able to pack 850 people into a single plane, but what impact will that volume have on airport infrastructure?

Sure, all you need is a runway long enough and a piece of tarmac large enough to allow the A380 to operate, but you still need to queue 850 people at check-in and/or boarding and get them to and from the plane which is going to result in very long turn times at airports not optimized to service the plane.

Three 787-3s have an OEW within about 10% of one A388 yet can carry more folks (300+), utilize the existing infrastructure at more airports and just plain operate out of more airports, period.

I believe Airbus would be far better served with a "domestic" model of the A330-300 or A350XWB-800. The 747 "domestic" was last century's answer to move large numbers of people by air short distances. By extension, so would an A380 "domestic". Boeing has launched this century's answer and now it is time for Airbus to do the same.

I don't understand why people care about A or B being in "preliminary talks" about anything, since all that means is A or B called up the airline and asked: "do you wanna buy some planes?"

Boeing has been in such "talks" with 15-20 airlines about the 747-8i. So far, it's not been a big seller.

I don't think anybody in India has ordered A318.

A single A318 doesn't make sense for an airline, unless it's meant to start a premium or all business class service. Are they established enough to have their own A318 Elite corporate jet?

Actually that was to VJM of Kingfisher airline and he ended up seliing an A319CJ to him, remember at that time KF was an all economy airline, and Leahy said i went in trying to sell an 800 pax plane but ended up selling up an 8 pax one.

Can we translate the term , "Airbus is in preliminary talks with two Indian airlines" , by both these Indian airlines have ruled out the 747-8I ?

In another way , if we speak about 9W and AI , have both these airlines made their choice in favor of the A380 ?

I remember to have read , 9W will make its choice between the A380 and the 747-8I this year. Will see.........

Someone who actually flew them could shed some more light, but I saw the layout on a physical seatmap brochure, not the internet, as this was before the internet, in the 80s. I remember it quite clearly. Maybe the brochure was showing crew bunks, but I don't recall that being the case.

The A380 market in India is pure ego. 777, A330/A340, 787 and 747 are far better since everything is 8 or 9 hours away. LHR, Tokyo, Singapore, bangkok, HKG or Europe needs frequency not size from India. An A380 wn;t cross the Atlantic from either so JFK or ORD are not possible. The gentlemen from Kingfisher is making a statement for his airline. Mr Villay will fly the A380 to Where?

I think we will see atleast LH, AF and EK sending A380s to India. I dont see why the A380 in India would be 'pure ego', based on the flying time to potential destinations.

Are not the likes of LH,AF,VS going to use their aircrafts to routes like JFK etc..which are well under 7 hours.

I get the point you are trying to make with regards to the indian market but your reasoning is incorrect---

The A380 may not be feasible for reasons like Infrastructure constraints/lesser flying population and over crowding of skies--but what you mention with regards to flying hours---i dont think so.

as far as my reasoning goes, A380 would be perfect for intra-metro routes. Only downside being that airports are not ready to handle that many passengers at the same time and frequency conscious business travelers might not find it very attractive unless it is early morning or late evening flight.

http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/Dis...file=Local_News2007020831456.xmlAs expected, it appears to be Jet Airways and Air India.

----------------------------------------------------------
According to Richard Carcaillet (director, product marketing) at A380, they are expecting a lot more orders for A380 in the near future. They are talking very actively with different carriers. “ India is a market we are looking into. We are talking with Jet Airways, Air-India and we are expecting to sell a lot of our aircrafts in that market,” he said.
