Airbus Wins Order For 6 A330F's.

Aviation Aircraft trading placed an order for 6 A332F. Aviation Aircraft trading places their aircraft and crew with airlines such as CX, LH, AF and SV according to the report. Who of them would be a potential taker?

The orders for mid size freighters are rolling in on both sides of the Atlantic these first few weeks of 2007...

Good news for both manufacturers.

Since the launch of the A330F, 40 commitments from 5 different customers have been announced. Interesting to note that of these 5 customers 3 of them commited to 6 each. Now if Kingfisher would commit to 6 aswell we could really talk about a six-pack of freighters...

Wow, in the same week both the 330 and the 767 gain orders, as well as the FedEx announcement about the 757. Good for both companies.
Why fly with 2 engines when you can have 3?

Indeed and I think it has to do with
- older freighters such as DC8 / 707 /727 /DC10 / B741 / A300 becoming real expensive to operate (fuel / maintenance). I once discussed it with a US DC8 operator (for Fedex) he mentioned c-check costs / downtime: staggering.
- the 9/11 + gulf war / boom in air traffic making airlines less able / willing to replace used aircraft freeing them up for conversions.

I spoke to several cargo operators desperately to get their hands on 763's but simply unable to get them for conversion. The UPS 767 order can be seen following this devlopment. They probably preffered 763 conversions but there are simply no airframes available. Boeing has a strategic interest to keep open the 767 line with a surprising win-win deal as a result.

Indeed, 6 planes seems like a magic number for cargo operators ordering the A330F... any particular reason why? or just coincidence?

The A330-200F is a derivative of the very popular A330 Family operated by more than 60 operators worldwide. This will greatly facilitate the entry into service of the new all-cargo variant into existing A330 fleets.

As for all Airbus aircraft currently in production, the A330-200F will also benefit from full operational commonality unique to Airbus thanks to the now well recognised Airbus Fly-By-Wire technology which also enables faster pilot transitioning to and from other Airbus aircraft, both passenger and freighter.

The A330-200F can carry up to 64 metric tonnes over 4,000 nautical miles/7400 km in its standard version. When selecting the optional payload mode the aircraft can carry 69 metric tonnes up to 3,200 nautical miles/5930km.

These range and payload capabilities will enable operators to grow their business by opening up or extending cargo routes currently operated.

Thanks to an optimized fuselage cross-section, it has the interior flexibility to carry a wide variety of pallet and container sizes for maximum interlining capability, offering 30 percent more volume than any freighter in its class.

40 planes since the launch of the program. The A332F has already passed the sales of the A342 and the A345. (OK, both niche aircraft.) That thing is really a success, sold 40 in a month, when production is 96 per year.

Neither was intended to be a niche aircraft, it just turned out that way.

The A330P/A330F program shows that if you actually give airlines what they are telling you they want instead of you telling them what they should want, customers will beat a path to your door.

A Boeing presentation for the 2005 Paris Air Show included the following quote, which is based on Airbus' 1987 market outlook for the A340:
Back in 1987, Airbus projected 490 total deliveries of A340 Classics by the end of 2005: 343 A340-300s and 147 A340-200s. Interestingly, only 28 A340-200s were built and Airbus now owns about half of them. The total projected production run for A340-200 and -300s right now is 241. It seems Airbus is going to fall a bit short of their original forecast for A340 Classics – by about half.

Unfortunately, the link no longer works, but someone on A.net may have saved a copy. In any case, 147 projected sales for the A342 isn't a lot, but it also isn't merely a "niche" aircraft. Certainly A342 sales must have disappointed, just as 764 sales must have been lower than Boeing expected.

It might be worth mentioning the expected sale numbers for the A330 (designed as the twin engined version of the A340) were considerably lower than what has been realized over the years by Airbus, thus unveiling a shift from 4 engined planes to 2 engined planes over the years, fully in line with the unexpected quick and smooth introduction of ever less strict ETOPS rules.

In that way, part of the expected sales for the A342 and A343 have been realised , albeit as A332 and A333....

I wonder if they should offer an A330-300F, too. It would offer more volume for the parcel carriers. Since the A333 is only slightly heavier than the A332, the penality would be low in case the weight limit is reached earler than the volume limit. In case the volume is actually needed, however, its economics will be great.

Isn't this a new commitment at the MoU stage? Airbus order for this year show 6 330F orders only for Guggenheim. The rest............well they aren't firm as yet.

In 1987 the P&W superfan saga was yet to rear its head. Airbus eventually launched the A332 to address poor A342 sales.

I'm glad you asked that because I wondered the same thing. I further wonder why Boeing never capitalized on the potential freighter sales that could come from freight models of the 767-400, 757-300 over even 737-800 or -900. Smaller freight operations might welcome new 737 freighters. DC-9s and 727s are still used as freighters, as are a few older 737s. These airplanes are going to need replacing some day.

There are lots used 737s and 767s on the market. Im sure of there was sufficient demand they would.

In a forecast that certainly did not include A340NG and had probably way lower A330 sales projected than we see today.
