Buy seats on delivery flight

Thu Feb 08, 2007 1:08 am

So here's your last chance to bid $10,000+ and get a seat on the CO delivery flight on March 23d.

Boeing will no longer be manufacturing the 777 (it will be replaced by the 787), so flying enthusiasts who have never yet traveled aboard one of these aircraft will appreciate this Delivery Flight.

Then again, the source of this press release is March of Dimes...

With an orderbook of more then 300 777s (5 year production) and some major recent orders for the cargo versions and the 777-300ER, I think the announcement of the 777 line closure is slightly premature. Yes, the 787 and A-350 will be more economical replacements for the older 777-200s, but see the 777 being built til 2018 and reaching 1200 examples AT LEAST.

Uh, okay that's incredibly misleading. Yeah, one day Boeing will stop making the 777, but for the time being the order books are packed and this is just CO's second to last. Change the title!

From the article:

I'm confused. This article wasn't clear. This can't be true right. They are just referring to COs 777 orders? Then why would they say this??? That's not only misleading, but just plain wrong. Boeing hasn't said anything about ending the 777 line, so what the heck is going on???

Relax, the press release was written by some PR person for the March of Dimes who is trying to promote a charity auction and who obviously doesn't know that much about aviation.

I remember when TZ got one of its first 757 and they invited guests on the flight from Seattle to IND, several people from the company I worked for were invited and said how special it was to experience that.

This new title is lame ("Buy seats on delivery flight", in case it gets changed again). It doesn't convey the intention of the original post at all.

If a change had to be made, something like Leelaw's suggestion was better. How about:

"March of Dimes Announces End of 777 Production"

Had the title been left as the thread starter decided, and not changed by all the forum police here, perhaps we'd all be better off  Yeah sure

The original title described exactly what the article said, whether the article was correct or not is irrelevant.

Good GOD this thread is a roller coaster ride. Glad the correction cleared things up, although I still think this is a borderline useless thread.

First a 777 gets cut up, and now the (wrong) article says the 777 line is getting shut down. Damn I'm getting old.

What's next? Is Kitty Hawk Aircargo scheduling freighter conversions on some 787's that Champion is pulling out of revenue service???

Anyone know how you actually find the eBay auction? I can't seem to find it, and the link to the MOD website does not have a hot link to the auction either. Is it over already?

Quoting Bphendri (Reply 22):

It's for F and J. F from your home airport to either IAH or EWR (unless you are on a regional flight where no F is available). Then F on the flight to SEA from EWR or IAH. Then J on the 777 to either IAH or EWR (I assume this is based on where they decide to deliver it?), then F on the flight back to your home city (if offered).

The dinner with executives sounds good, though it's with the executives and 80 other people, so who knows which 'kids table' you will end up at. But you do fly in the J cabin with Larry Kellner and Boeing execs, though I bet they are in the front part of J and you are in mini-J cabin...

We really should make a collection of aviation related nonsense we find somewhere - this one really is funny. 777 production will go until 2018 or 2025, depending if Boeing will make some updates to welcome the A350, or decides not to do so and to bring out the next generation earlier.

At least it looks Boeing spotted the nonsense itself, and took action. So now I wonder, do they just follow a.net, or did they find it without our help.

Now looking at it seriously, another press release said that it would be the last or next to last 777 for CO, I wonder if this means that the 777 has already fall victim of the 787 or simply that they do not plan to add more widebodies for a very long time.

What do you think?

The auction got zero bids, BUT....

They are reopening the auction, through 28th February, and the new minimum bid is $4999. This is after I emailed them and told them that $10k was too high, and I personally would have bid if it were $5000. So they are giving me a $1 discount!!

Assuming the economics work for Ikramerica, the whole a.net community is eagerly expecting an EXCLUSIVE trip report...  mischievous  Let them know that only through this site's efforts the 777 program is not canceled (at least in the public perception)!

After going through some excruciating pain discussing giving to my alma mater in honor of an anniversary reunion, I shudder to imagine my wife's reaction to a proposal like this--and happy for whoever gets the winning bid (better have some good questions to ask the big shots).

I was outbid at the 11th hour by a new bidder, which is good, because I really didn't want to pay $6850, but it was for a good cause and a good time.

Who knows, if the snipe bidder falls out, I'm the second place guy...
