AA To Begin Daily MIA-XNA Service

Fri Feb 09, 2007 1:22 am

Another "Wal*Mart Express" route. American Eagle will begin non-stop service between Miami and Northwest Arkansas on 10 April 2007:

AA 4515 XNA 0630-1020 MIA
AA 4515 MIA 2045-2245 XNA

The service will operate daily with an ERJ-140, and is now bookable.

From Northwest Arkansas, American Airlines and American Eagle fly to Chicago, Dallas, LaGuardia, Los Angeles, St. Louis and, now, Miami.

Not a surprising route. It has been rumoured for a very long time. I'm a little surprised it has come before Miami-Birmingham, though, that route has been expected forever. Alabama is the only state in the Southern United States with no non-stop flights to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.

This is the third new route for AA at MIA this spring. Cozumel launches next month, and, pending government approval, Valencia will launch in late April.

Rumour has it that Miami-Austin is next, launching in June, with a daily 738.

XNA appears to be a near gold mine for AA/AE, with DFW ORD LGA MIA LAX STL its practically a focus city for them.

Id be curious to see where XNA ranks among nonhib and focus city stations for AA/AE, i know XNA now has more AA/AE seats that cities like BDL!

Why didn't they announce this last week when they loaded it? They also added LGA/TVC and CVG/LGA and swapped 2 daily RJs to 1 narrowbody on AUS/RDU.

LGA-TVC isn't new. Operates every year. American Eagle has a tendency to load flights well before they are bookable.

Also, where do you see CVG-LGA, I don't see that one.

When the new Airport was opened in the late 1990s, American and American Eagle seized on the opportunity and added a ton of services. American is by far the biggest carrier at XNA, with the new Miami flight they have twenty flights per day during the week.

the list of cities, especially small cities, that have offerings to each of AA's hubs/focus cities is limited

Exclude BOS JFK LGA ORD RDU MIA DFW AUS STL LAX and what other cities offer service to that many destinations? Quite an accomplishment for an airport with less than 1 million annual enplanements!

Hey MAH4546 -

Will AA eagle ever re-start it's services to TLH? DL Connection has flown TLH-MIA by themselves for years , with the exception of when AirTran briefly flew TLH-TPA-MIA. DL doesn't even have any connecting flights, so it's all O&D. AA could at least not only capture those passengers, but others connecting on to Mexico, Carribbean and S. America, no?

I know I wasn't asked, but I'll answer anyway!  Smile

Personally, I think that Eagle could easily make a TLH station work once again. The city, at least in my view, could definitely support 1-2x daily AT7 flights to MIA, and 1-2 daily EMB flights to DFW. If the market really responded well, as has happened in places like PNS and MOB, maybe even a daily ORD EMB would be in order.

Unfortunately, there is an unintended side effect - poor Ft. Smith airport down the road has practically dried up. American Eagle to DFW and Northwest AirLink to MEM is all that remains...

Did all service to Joplin, MO get suspended? I didn't see any commerical flights on Flightaware. They used to get 737 service in the 80's.

2x wouldn't work. You need to offer at least three daily flights to be competitive, and government traffic won't find an ATR-72 accepetable. It would need to be an ERJ service to compete well with Delta's seven daily flights.

At work, we recently completed a huge study for all of the airports in Arkansas, and in looking at their commercial service flights, i have often wondered if XNA-LIT flights would work, one the capital, the other being a major economic center in the same state, with the drive time being over 4 hrs. AA does faily well in LIT and i often wonder if they could maybe 3-4 ERJs between LIT-XNA make $$$, the only other feasible option would be Mesa with B1900's.

AA would never even think of flying LIT-XNA, let alone anyone throw an RJ at this guarenteed money-losing route.

Generally it hits OAG on Thursdays, and is disseminated to all the GDSs by the end of the weekend. Unless they pull it like CVG/LGA

American Eagle is also increasing Miami-Charlotte to five daily flights, Key West to six daily, and American Eagle/MQ will replace American Eagle/OW on one Miami-Jacksonville flight, offering RJ service for the first time on this route. This is American Eagle's MIA summer schedule, for those who care:

ATR-72
Cozumel - 1x
Freeport - 3x
Fort Myers - 4x
George Town - 2x
Jacksonville - 3x
Key West - 6x
Marsh Harbour - 1x
Nassau - 9x

ERJ-140
Charlotte - 5x
Cincinnati - 1x
Cleveland - 1x
Columbus - 1x Mo-Fr/3x on SaSu
Greensboro - 1x
Indianapolis - 2x
Jacksonville - 1x
Memphis - 2x
Norfolk - 1x
Northwest Arkansas - 1x
Pittsburgh - 1x
Richmond - 1x
Washington/Dulles - 1x (mainline also flies this route)

Birmingham, Charleston, and San Antonio are in the pipeline and AA wants to put more jets on the Jacksonville route. No timeline, because with a limited availability of ERDs, AA can't just add routes, and is doing their best to find the optimal routes and frequencies to use them on.

Ideally, American Eagle would also like to go double daily to Pittsburgh and return to double daily on Cleveland and Richmond. Indianapolis might be getting mainline back this fall.

Savannah rumours are heating up again lately, but it would be ATR-72s, and there is also talk of flying to Merida next winter, also using ATRs.

I know CLE was double when MQ took over... I never understood why they pulled it (I know, no a/c avalibe) it was always full and the tickets pulled a pretty good buck in... well hopefully they can rotate some ERD's out of the ORD base down there...

I'm really surprised that TLH hasn't seen AA Eagle move in as well with flights to DFW. PNS, VPS and MOB seem to be doing very well with their flights, I think TLH could do well with about 4 or 5 dailies to DFW, and also with flights to MIA. I could also see PFN (Panama City, FL) to DFW working for Eagle with maybe 3 dailies.

I thought PNS-MIA was also rumored at one point. that sure would be nice to see too.

I was not surprised to hear about the MIA-XNA route earlier this week... I was however surprised by the timing of the departures.

The early out, and late return is great for XNA residents who want to take a nice trip to Florida, Caribbean, Latin America... but not so good for Miami merchants who wish to go pray at the temple of Walmart.

For business travel I think an early flight out of Miami and a mid afternoon return would be better. Hopefully we can work up to double or triple daily frequencies.

It won't go more than 1x daily, you can bet on it. The market is not large enough. The schedule absolutely maximizes the number of possible connections for XNA-bound/orignating passengers. There are only 53 daily passengers, in both directions, between Miami and Northwest Arkansas.
