YYZ's Infield Hold Terminal, Permanent?

Fri Feb 09, 2007 2:07 am

When the infield hold terminal at YYZ was built, I kept hearing that it was only to be there until more of the new Terminal 1 was completed. But, looking at the plans for the main terminal (impressive) they keep including the Infield Hold Terminal in their total gates available. Is it actually to be a permanant fixture at the airport for the next 20 years?

I had heard that once all the construction at the new T1 was complete, the infield terminal may be tranformed into something to do with Cargo...that was a year or so ago, so that may have changed now...

The infield terminal is designed to be able to be taken apart with the intent to move it to another location.

GTAA designed it this way so that if the need be, they could move it around, perhaps even to the new Pickering Airport planned for sometime in the future.

It WILL have to be moved eventually, as it is awfully damn close to where the proposed 23L/05R would be located.

It is supposed to be removed in 2012, but i dont think it will be reused somehow. The building is designed to come part into 3 major pieces that can be broken down into components for truck movement. The only problem is Pickering is most likely not going to happen for another 30-40 years if ever, so i can't see the IFTB being reused.

If you're talking about Pickering as a major International Airport, yes.. If you're talking about Pearson as a GA Airport, then you're wrong.

Check out the Pickering Airport report that's on the GTAA website.. Quite an awesome read for aviation enthusiasts.. They have runway layouts already planned, terminal possible locations, everything.

It's such an important part to the GTAA, that they have an office already about 500 yards away from the proposed airport lands, at Brock Road and Hiway 7.

Air Canada & other T1 Airlines will still be using the IFT gates as an overflow, particularly for the busier summer months. My understanding is that 3 gates have been left serviceable for this purpose. The GTAA have apparently returned most of the busses used to transport passengers from T1 to the IFT.
ATC may also make use of the apron area for some gate-holds during de-icing operations.

I thought there were also plans for another de-icing facility just north of the IFT (much smaller than the main de-ice facility). I suspect that there is more than enough room for a new runway, the IFT and a small de-icing facility.

Take Care!

I am talking about pickering as any form of airport that needs a 12 jetway terminal. Pickering is a good 30 years away from seeing true airline service, if then.

I think they should move westjet over to the IFT, they could have their own terminal. However everyone would need to check in about 1/2 hour earlyer for their bags to make it on time...

Have they finally put a Tim Hortons in there? Neither 3 nor 2 had one.

I was at the in-field in December and the only thing in there was an overpriced coffee shop that was run by CARA. Sorry to say no Timmie HO HO's.

My wife is a travel agent, and the rumours floating around her office are that the in-field is going to be used for charters, such as Skyservice and Sunwing. Rumours only, she has heard nothing concrete. I hope they blow the in-field up. The place is just a pain in the rump. We were very lucky that on our trip in December that our flight from BGI actually arrived at T-1, so we were able to make our connection to YWG. If we had arrived at the in-field, it would have been another RON at Pearson.

T1 Has three tim hortons, one on the second level right after you enter security for domestic gates, one at the hamerhead for international gates, and one ground side near international arrivals (but on the second level)

T3 has a Tims too doesn't it? Its been a while since I've been in there but I know that last spring and the year before that I grabbed a Timmies before flying to YOW and YUL. Back to the IFT, maybe they could sell it to YHM when the time comes, lord knows it would be a big improvement over there.

There is one in Pier F for the TB pax as well...so now if you are flying out of T1, you will have access to a Timmies.

Just on the International/Domestic side of things. Nothing for TB.

Tim Hortons? Yawn. I'd rather something different for once. YYZ definatley needs more food options.

As far as the IFT goes I'll be the first one saying "good riddance" when they finally tear that piece of crap down.

Why would you not expect snack options to be important to Canadians - either north or south of the 49th Parallel? (YYZ is located at 43° 40' N. BTW) Smile
