Non-stop JFK-GIG?

Fri Feb 09, 2007 11:29 am

Since AA/RG pull out of this route a few years back is there any hope of a return? AA's current flight routes JFK-GRU-GIG but would a separate JFK-GIG take away yields from JFK-GRU?

Would JJ consider such a route?

Recently TAM started a second daily GRU-JFK-GRU flight but I believe there has been some talk of TAM starting a GIG-JFK-GIG flight.

Another possibility is Delta.

As per DOT reports, AA take 1/3 of their pax from GIG. If we consider that all connections will board at GRU, for sure a non-stop JFK-GIG will hurt the GRU flight, but i'm sure that will hurt all operators on this route (DL, JJ, AA, JL and even CO at EWR) as they are now fighting for the lowest fare/yield route US-Brazil (DL, JL and JJ offers good C class deals to JFK, but no one good deal for ATL or MIA).

This is a kind of non-sense as they keep 38 weekly flights New York/Newark-Sao Paulo and no one to Rio.

There are rumors about a future GIG-JFK with JJ but i'm not so confident on this. For me it's easy to see DL, if they can get more 7 flights, running a GIG-JFK (Brazil could be similar to Spain with flights from ATL/JFK to both MAD/BCN).

I don't have number for all flights, but on January 28 i have numbers for JJ flights to JFK:

JJ8082 - 0900 GRU-JFK - A332 - PT-MVH - 110 pax - 68 connections
JJ8080 - 2245 GRU-JFK - A332 - PT-MVL - 121 pax - 76 connections

Connections means pax from EZE, SCL, CWB, POA and all the others thru GRU. Do not include connections out of CGH (main domestic airport in São Paulo).

Although it's just one day, It helps to understand how strong this flight is in term of connections.

Those are horrendous loads. I really hope that this isn't the norm. And late January is not a slow travel month to Brazil.

I forget to mention the flights back, and they are better:

JJ 0 8083 0 28/1/2007 08:00 GRU A330 PT-MVG 175 A 0
JJ 0 8081 0 28/1/2007 17:45 GRU A330 PT-MVH 184 A 0

* JJ does not receive connections out of JFK, so all their pax are O&D JFK. Of course all pax could obtain their own connections.
