Embraer 170 Engine Sounds

Sat Feb 10, 2007 1:57 am

I may be mistaken, but the E jets feature the same engines as the CRJs correct? CF-34? Im just curious if they also sound like the CRJs with the high pitch sounds, or if they are a deeper grumble simular to that of other wing mounted engine types, such as the 737, Or A320series...
Thanks!

Actually no. The more powerful CF-34's from the CRJ-700/900 are the same as the E-JETS. The sound is to me more inline with the CFM International engines from the 737/A320's. This is my .02.

The E170 has CF34-8 engines, similar to the CRJ700/900 engines. The E190 has CF34-10 engines, which use an altogether different core (scaled down from the CFM56).

Both E170 and E190 sound less whiny than the CRJs, in my opinion. Engine placement may have more to do with that than the engine type - as you mentioned.

True...from the inside. I haven't flown on an E170, but sitting forward of the engines on a 190, it sounds much like a quieter 737 (very faint 'groan' of the compressors on takeoff, and a little whine). From the outside though, I've noticed, the E-jets are rather loud. Compared to the CRJ series, they have a much louder roar from their exhaust (about as loud as a 737-3/4/500). Anyone else notice that?

Also it depends on where you are sitting on the plane. The back is like riding in a 767, or like we like to think the space shuttle. Its a roaring noise. While in the front, its a fan noise with a rumble. If you are lucky to sit in the front, some pilots use a "climb 1" power setting that actually adds more power to the engines after takeoff. There is a definate whine during these takeoffs.

I love the sound of the E190 when it starts up here at the Hangar. It is such a low-pitched moan that you feel it through your body.

Does anyone else feel like the 170 puts out a LOT of thrust on take-off. It really seems to push you back in your seat. I would compare it to the same feeling that a 757 puts out on take-off.

The E-170 has the highest thrust:weight ratio of the E-Jet series. It is quite a powerful little airplane. I enjoy working on them, and the takeoff is one of the reasons why! Also, go-arounds in the -170 are fantastic, and so are ferry flights. When that plane is empty - their is no holding it back.
Prepare doors for departure and cross-check.

I worked a repo from JFK to LGA last year. Awesome. No PAX and 8k in fuel. I took a vid from takeoff to touchdown and the flight lasted just over 14 minutes. BTW our cruise for the flight was 2,000. It was awesome. Takeoff roll was on 22R and we were off befoer the displaced threshhold. About 2000 ft.

PS. anyone who wants the vid email me.

Does anyone know where the 170/175 play in with wing area compared to the CRJ900, and the 737/3/4/5? Just curious about that as well.

The 170 wing-span is 85 feet 4 inches. Is that what you mean? I don't know about the others.
