Europe Charters @ MSY Today

Sat Feb 10, 2007 3:10 am

Today we're getting in our usual assortment of Monarch, Thomas Cook, and Thomsonfly aircraft for cruise ship charters. Currently, there's a Monarch A332 parked at gate C-5. Later this afternoon we'll be seeing two more 330's, 2 763's, and 1 762 come in. I have my digital cam with me so I'll snap some pics and post them as the afternoon progresses. The airport is jumping today, needless to say.

Hello, why didn't you guys call me?

Because sometimes we actually do a little work around here  wink  .....speaking of which, I was able to get the pics below because among my many duties here at the MSY is being the Construction/Project Coordinator for the airport, and one ongoing project of mine is the complete reroofing of concourses A and B. So I spent a goodly portion of today on the concourse B roof with my contractor.....and got the following pics:

A Monarch A330-200 was the first one in, he parked at gate C5:
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l264/tmoore065/DSC01607.jpg?t=1171056628

Something we’d never seen at MSY before, an Iberworld A330-300:
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l264/tmoore065/DSC01618.jpg?t=1171056597

Iberworld approached MSY’s runway 01 hot and high, landed long, crammed on the brakes, and turned off at the last turnoff. He was met at gate C11 by the four MSY ARFF trucks, as he had reported having hot brakes:
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l264/tmoore065/DSC01622.jpg?t=1171056562

A ThomsonFly 767-200 was the third one in. He pulled in right below us at gate B8.

Three others are scheduled in later on this afternoon and this evening.

These charters are meeting up with the P & O Cruises ship “Arcadia”, which is leaving the Port of New Orleans tomorrow evening for an Eastern Caribbean cruise;

Here are some that I took today. That A333 was a nice surprise to say the least!

N1120A, I've been so busy lately (ie, no days off), I completely forgot about all of the action today until I got to the airport and saw the ticket counters. There will be a next time, I can assure you.

Once I can get back to the office and check out MSYTristar's pics on my desktop (and not this BlackBerry) I'll probably see myself in one of his pics.....the one of the Iberworld 330 landing over concourse B. I was with the guys working on the roof.

Btw, I checked the Arcadia's schedules.....the next time she's in port here is in November.

Well since December, we've seen a total of 3 Thomas Cook, 6 Thomsonfly, 2 Monarch, 1 Iberworld, and 1 Virgin Atlantic aircraft doing UK-MSY cruise charters. Not too shabby. I'd like to see them on a more year-round basis but they are coordinated with the cruise lines' schedules, and they tend to service MSY during the Winter season. I have to say thanks to P&O and Swan Hellenic cruises for continuing to offer MSY sailings, and in fact expanding on them this year. The ships typically spend about 2-3 days in New Orleans, allowing the guests to visit the city before and/or after the cruise.

PS - I am in love with the flight attendants on the Monarch/Thomas Cook/Thomsonfly/Virgin birds. All of them are knockouts. And that accent...oh man...that'll be the death of me!

I take it there isn't an alternative airport for the charters given the fees at MSY?

no, MSY is the only commercial airport within 65mi of the city that can (routinely) accept anything larger than a 757.

Within 65mi? I would say even greater than that whe you factor in customs facilities and the like. BTR would be hard pressed to do it at all and GPT definately doesn't have the customs and terminal facilities to do it.

MSY-FRA: 5x weekly LH A333 service
MSY-AMS: 5x weekly KL A332 service

MSY-CDG: 3x weekly AF A332 service
MSY-FRA: 5x weekly LH A333 service
MSY-AMS: 5x weekly KL A332 service

I'd say the latter is probably our best bet followed by the middle. As for KL, seems a longshot now, since CO has the Shell contract. Tom said something about trying to attract MP for AMS nonstop at one point though.

If AF ever came here... I doubt it'd be with an A330, which has a higher biz-to-steerage configuration ratio. It'd most likely be opped by an Abomination, as they're less tailored towards biz markets and have more Y seats for tourists.

Still surprises me that BOH gets flights to MSY and airports like NCL don't

While it doesn't surprise me that there are no flights from NCL-MSY, i am surprised that there are no cruise charters to Barbados, even if it only be for the Ocean Village cruises. Bournemouth is quite popular with cruise charters as it is in one of the wealthiest areas of the UK. Also, with it's close proximity to Southampton, there are many 'frequent cruisers' in the area, doing Southampton-Europe in the summer, and Caribbean cruises in the Winter.

MyTravel... used to always be with the bunch, but we haven't seen them in quite a while.

Doesn't surprise me. A few years ago, they had 10 long haul aircraft to play around with, and even when they did send 2 or 3 A330's off on Hajj duties, they would get in 1 or 2 in to replace them, usually from Skyservice. But for much of this winter, they were operating long haul flights with just one A330 and two 767-300's.

There was 1 flight, NCL-bGI and return 2 weeks later on a Monarch 767

Are Bath Travel, the BOH area tour operator involved with these flights - could explain there being so many BOH flights compared to other destinations

It depends, do they book heavily on the cruises out of New Orleans?

Just looked on the BOH website. Bath Travel are the tour operator involved which explains BOH being a departure point

Interesting.

Know the reason for the drastic cutback in longhaulers? Was it retiring their D10s?

They were in financial trouble, following a few bad summers. They disposed of their 4 DC-10's and 3 767's, leaving them with 3 A330's (4 in the summer). They have since got back two 767's. Over the winter they leased 2 A330's over to Mytravel AS, who leased 2 A333's off for Hajj duties.

I wasn't aware of that, thanks.

Still, I would have expected Thomsonfly to fly some cruise flights from Newcastle, especially given that they are flying cruise charters to the Caribbean from 14 UK airports this Winter, and NCL is one of their larger regional bases.

Screw both of y'all for not telling us! Where's that birdfinger smiley??

My oh my.....how quickly we forget where our MSY bread is buttered! Better start being nice or the next two words you'll hear will be.....ACCESS DENIED!!!  wink

I take it there isn't an alternative airport for the charters given the fees at MSY?

Kirkie, our fees are miniscule enough, at least for the signatory carriers: $1.07/thousand landing fee, and an $8 pax service fee. Non-signatories (ie charters) landing fees are in the $3 range.

That sign over the counter they were using is a temporary sign (which usually resides in a storage room in our airport operations office) hung over the TACA sign, and the counter personnel were from an airport-based fixed base operator.
