FedEx & DHL's Fleet

which one has a larger fleet?!?!

and i've seen lots of articles and in discussions forums that FedEx and DHL are always (and love to) buy 2nd hand planes fm i know..FEDEX is buying all the MD-11s fm Swissair and DHL is buying 727s fm NWA..!?!?!?!?!and more?!?! they like to buy 2nd handed planes didnt they?!?!?!?

There is nothing wrong with operating old aircraft. Planes like the DC-10, MD-11, and older Airbus models are fine for transporting packages. Delta is selling all their MD-11's to FedEx, Swissairs MD-11's I believe are going to FedEx, and the NW 727's are going to DHL. The cargo business is booming and the demand for larger aircraft is there. In one night at SDF, UPS operates as many as 4 747's, not to mention their little army of DC-8's, 757's, 767's, and the convertable 727.

FedEx definitely has the larger fleet. DHL is a grwoing forwarder (tying to make that leap into being a self contained shipping operation) but their fleet size isn't even on the same scale as FedEx or UPS - not even close.

About the second hand fleet... don't forget UPS, FedEx' and DHL's typical hub-operations are only suitable for flying 2 or 3 sectors a day. The disadvantages of an old jet (3 crew, figher fuelburn and overhaul) are smaller than the higher purchase or leasing costs of new aircraft. That's why cargo operators fly around with older stuff, or a mix of both (FedEx also bought new A306s and MD-11s, UPS fleet is for 65% first hand).
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?
