Alma de Mexico Boosts Bombardier CRJ200 Fleet by Leasing Five More Aircraft
TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 30, 2007 -- Bombardier Aerospace announced today that AeroLineas MesoAmericanas, "Alma de Mexico" will lease five additional previously owned 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets. Alma currently operates a fleet of eight previously owned CRJ200 aircraft.

Alma de Mexico was established as a full-service regional airline in 2006. It is based in Guadalajara, from where it serves domestic routes.

"These five additional CRJ200 regional jets will further our expansion in accordance with our business plan," said Guillermo Heredia, President and Founder of Alma. "Judging by our experience with our eight aircraft, we made the correct decision in acquiring the Bombardier CRJ200 for our fleet."

"Given the outstanding economics and performance of previously owned CRJ200 aircraft, they will continue to be vital assets for regional airlines," said Rod Sheridan, Vice-President, Asset Management Group, Bombardier Regional Aircraft.

Anybody know how this young airline is doing?????

thanx in advance

I am glad that they are happy with their choice of aircraft and that they are already growing. Are they already flying GDL-TLC? This is a route that has already Volaris and Interjet (plus all the other carriers doing MEX-GDL) but it seems like a very vital route nonetheless.

I would think that if Alma grows steadily and healthily, it will at some point need larger aircraft. Anybody care to speculate whether they will stick to Canadair planes or look for something else?

Sadly, I don't have any info about Alma to share with you. There is not much information about Alma available.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Hi Eddie. I read on an aviation magazine that Regional jets don't make money on their own, airlines have to feed them to larger airplanes to turn a profit, so that's a good question. My opinion is If ALMA is turning a profit with CRJs, I can see them getting the larger CRJ in the future, and sticking with the CRJ. As far as their financial status, thanks anyway, I'll keep on searching.....

IMO as a frequent passenger, I think Alma is a success. I am very proud of having our own hometown airline. Nice view at the GDL airport everynight with the line up of CRJ's. Their GDL-PBC is a sample. They started one flight a day now they have 3, service is OK and fares excelent. Another example is the GDL-PVR. 3 flights a day. for less than half the price 6A charges, and in jets, not props. I hope with the arrival of more planes, they add GDL-OAX, GDL-VSA, and more routes that currently force us to go through MEX, and to pay exhorbitant fares.

I would rather fly Alma than Avolar, with the exception perhaps of GDL-TIJ, because Alma is not nonstop.

Regards.

I will venture to say the following: I see ALMA giving AeroMar and AeroLitoral a run for their money in the near future. If they keep growing at this pace, serving small markets that do not support big airplanes, they will grow to become a big regional airline. No LCC started operations from GDL, therefore, they got a good start and after they have a solid name I see them invading AeroLitoral and AeroMar's territory! My guess is that they will stick to regional airplanes, since bigger planes will make them decide between regional and LCC.

I tend to disagree. They can make money on their own only if they are used in the corrrect markets. In Mexico, we have airlines like VW (AeroMar) flying ATR's with average load factors of 44%, but average fares in the range of US$200 - US$400 one way on average flight distance of 500 miles.

This is strange news to me as I knew ALMA was getting 8 more CRJ200ER's this year plus 4 additional CRJ900s which are due for the end of the year which will boost capacity to 100 seats. ALMA is doing the things right and giving hard times to 5D at GDL and they have recently too started approaching historical 5D and VW markets from MTY. They arrive to the Mexican market strong and I sure see them staying.

Roger. Its something I read, I really wouldn't know if Regional Jets can make money on their own. Let's hope they do, we want ALMA to do well, and grow..

They are doing pretty well, only a minor inconvenience this weekend, as one of their frames got a blown tire in landing and the rubber hitted the flaps and cowlings, the plane was stuck 2 days here in MTY getting a new set of flaps and engine cowling, the plane departed about 8:30pm.
