Trans Puerto Rican Airlines?

Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:28 pm

Someone I know in NY says that a group is trying to raise capital for an airline based out of San Juan PR which would initially flying three used 767-300's between JFK and San Juan first going for Puerto Ricans flying home but then expanding to other US cities with a feed going to the Carribean. In that there are probably more Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico than in New York this sounds like a good untapped market-what do a.netters think?

SJU-NYC is untapped?
AA: SJU-JFK 5x (AB3, 763, 757); SJU-EWR 1x (757)
CO: SJU-EWR 5x (753, 739, 738)
B6: SJU-JFK 3x (320)

I wouldn't call this an untapped market.

This would be a LCC! With so many potential travelers a LCC might do very well with SJU-JFK traffic as a backbone. Their calculations show that e if every "expat" PR made a trip once every three years traffice would double (Yes I know that PR's are citizens I'm simply speaking of expats the same way one would think of NYers who move to Florida!).

Not to forget the BDL service on the A300/757.

For travel one month from now, I just found a fare on AA for $246. How much lower do you think fares on this route can go? B6 (the LCC in this market) has fares higher than AA for the same time period.

This would be true for a lot of markets. If everyone in America with Irish roots made a trip once every three years to Ireland, there would be even more traffic between the US and Ireland. "If" is a pretty big word. What evidence do they have that every expat is going to make a trip. Seems like CO, AA and B6 would already be increasing service if this expat demand was there.

FWIW I believe there are more people of Puerto Rican heritage in the New York City metro area than there are on the island. And secondly it is a huge market that is well served. NYC-SJU is second only to MIA-SJU.

I believe CO has service from Newark to Ponce and Aguadilla as well.

Depending on the season NYC-SJU could likely support a few additional flights. But it is doubtful that a start up carrier could be successful using JFK-SJU as a springboard route.... especially w/ 767s. I also wonder about the availability of 767-300s on the used market right now.
