Dubai Will Have World's Longest Runway.

Wed Feb 14, 2007 4:23 am

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b154/Kaitak744/dubairunway1.jpg

As you can see, 30L/12R is being lengthened. I used the ruler on Google earth and discovered that when it is finished, it will be 18,700ft!. This makes it the world longest active runway. Now, this may seem like a crazy question, but why would Dubai need it?

Maybe something to do with the summer heat, it can hit 50C and must have an effect upon payload on take off.

They're probably working on because its really hot....

And because Dubai likes to build the biggest and bestest.

But I don't understand why they're putting in so much money into DXB. Aren't they already building up on Jebel Ali?

Anyone know the progress of that airport?

Even at 18,700 ft, would that still be enough to get an A380 off the ground at 50 C without weight restrictions???

The runway at Area 51 is 25,300 ft (though some of it is on the dry lakebed). It is certainly active...

True, that is the world's longest runway (and it is actually all paved). However, it is far from active. There are Xs painted over the runway and cracks all over the pavement.

DXB does have the counterbalance of being at sea level. At a certain point, the tires wont take the speed and having a longer runway is moot. DXB at 50C isn't particularly worse than DEN at 35-40C for density altitude, given that DEN is over 5280 feet.

Just look at LPB for example. Its elevation is 13325 ft, and its runway is 13123 ft long, which is probably barely long enough for taking off of there with aircraft such as the A320, 757 or even the 747, to somewhere close or to a fuelstop point like VVI. Even if it had an 18000 ft runway, many aircraft would still be highly weight restricted.

Actually the new 30L/12R will be no where near that long. The work in progress is to stagger the two runways so traffic landing/departing from 30R/12L will not have to cross the other runway on the north side. When completed the new 30L/12R will finish about half way down the other runway.

Those lines in the desert hardly qualify as a runway. If you look at Google Earth, 1/3 of runway 17/35 is washed away by the water of that supposedly dry lake bed.

Don't know how long it will take to finish, but I flew into DXB a few days ago and the work looked about 80 per cent complete.

LTU932, The runways will remain parallel but 30L will end about half way down 30R. You can see the threshold of 30L in the picture at the beginning of this thread.

While the airport name may be "Vostochny", many people only know it as ULY (Ulyanosvsk, the city).

And of course you forgot Bangda, China: 5500m / 18044ft.

Edit: The Space Shuttle doesn't need the long runways at EDW. At KTTS (Titusville, Florida NASA Shuttle Landing Facility), where the Shuttle normally lands, there's a 15000ft / 4572m runway.

And no, the huge runway at Area 51 isn't paved. As it has already been stated, most of it is on the salt lake. I've read that part was de-activated, simply because it isn't needed.

2nd edit: spelling !

In the US, It a process to to allow dual simultaneous operations on runways that are closer then required separation. By separating the runway threshold (ends) it reducers the require separation between the runway center lines. I believe ICAO also has a similar standard. It is a way to increase the operational capacity of the runways.

How much runway will the A380 typically need to take-off when at/or near MTOW?

Dubai can be quite rediculous... they are more or less at sea level, even at 50C, what needs 18,000 feet?

Nothing I can think of.

An in the event they ever did make a longer runway than the USAF has at Edwards AFB or Area 51, it probably stay longer for a very long time.

If anyone will get into a pissing contest with Dubai, it is the US military. How much money has been spent on the biggest, fastest, most powerful whatever? Last year they successfully tested a mach 8 plus rocket sled.

Go figure.

This new runway will service United's new "Exosphere Express" flights which will carry passengers in a rather cramped but cozy 15 seat jet that will fly up to 350,000 feet and fly roughly 10,000 mph before re-entering the Earth's atmosphere and landing at Dubai after a 1 hour flight from Chicago  Smile j/w what is the purpose of this runway anyways?

Literally it means that they have the same compass orientation, but are not side-by-side. Think Berlin Schönefeld, BUD, LED and also runways 18R-36L vs 18C-36C at AMS. So it's not the same as "side-by-side" such as MUC, LHR, ATH, FRA etc.

Jebel Ali will not be opened until 201?, until then it makes sense to increase the capacity of the existing airport. And as already mentioned above, Jebel Ali will be opened as a cargo facility initially.

What are the 4 runways in the salt (03L&R 09L&R) used for then? or what were they used for? - they are touching each other so how could they ever be used properly?

It must have been mental to land or take off in whatever they built to use that massive runway!

I thought Zhukovsky in Russia had the world's current longest PAVED runway at a little over 18,000 ft.

Actually, it's 17726 ft / 5403 m.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

speaking of jebel ali , are there any pictures in the database showing the current situation? any related site?

Last time I drove by the construction site (about a month ago), they have started with levelling the ground.

Pretty close. Still, it's got to be the current longest paved runway.

What are the 4 runways in the salt (03L&R 09L&R) used for then? or what were they used for? - they are touching each other so how could they ever be used properly?

(Coming from a layperson - don't crucify me if I'm wrong)

The salt lake runways would most likely be used in the event of test emergencies, depending on the wind directions.
Edwards doesn't have anywhere near enough traffic to make simultaneous runway use an issue, so they are strictly additional choices for a test pilot in the event of problems.

The conjoined runways could also be used DURING tests, to allow pilot A to land on the left side, and the chase plane to land on the right. I don't have the proper google earth to see, but I'd imagine both of those runways are VERY wide indeed.

They built out the concrete runway to long lengths to support the test flight and rollouts needed for airplane projects. I'm sure the Space Shuttle also had something to do with it too, as the long rollout length would be useful to save brakes, in the event of a landing diverted from Florida.

Regarding Area 51's prodigiously long runway: We have to get those UFO balanced field lengths down! Perhaps some Kruegers, leading edge slats and triple-slotted Fowler flaps like in the old Boeing 727. Heck lets go with the anti-gravity.

Royal Flying Doctor service in Australia uses the stuart hwy as a landing strip, one section of it is fully marked like a normal runway. The stuart highway stretches from Darwin in Australias North to Adelaide in the South, over 3200km, so 3200000m, or 10496000 feet
