Hub Closures

Thu Feb 15, 2007 3:37 am

What is the protocol when two (2) hub airports are closed? For example, if CLE and EWR are closed, would CO route everyone through IAH? Or, will they just delay flights until the hub re-opens?

You do the best you can and pray for the best. It certainly happens -- surely there must have been times that ATL and CVG have both gone down or on ground stop simoultaneously for Delta, or O'Hare and DEN for United, and I definitely know from personal experience that AA has had days when ORD was on ATC ground stop or gate holds and DFW had massive weather delays.

It happens, and the airlines just try and get as many people, planes and cargo to their destination as possible.

It's a mess, though!

How about the superstorm of 93... PIT, PHL, and BOS were closed for US, as was DCA. Four big bases shut down. Weren't ORD and IAD closed for UA as well? That would also affect AA, given that ORD and BOS were already mentioned...

Really depends on the airline. When DL closed DFW, they moved lots of the traffic to SLC and ATL. But when they closed their PDX Asian gateway, they pretty much abandoned the Far East.

Actually, I meant closed due to wx, not permanently closed. Sorry for the confusion.

I thought that as well, but then I read the first post and found that it involved weather-related situations; not just typical functions of the airlines themselves

Theres a finite number of seats in the hubs that are open. The seats will be filled up, and everyone else will wait.

There isnt much of a set protocal, px will get booked on flights where ever seats are, which typically well send them through other avaible hubs. When the other hubs are closed or saturated, random cities become connecting points.
eg. ORD-DFW with a connection in XNA.
In some cases, revenue management will show flights full when they have 20+ seats avail. This gives the airport some room to accomidate stranded px or reshuffle between flights on a local level.

I can tell you this: When LGA, EWR or JFK close which is way too often a lot of times; surprise, surprise we get the diversions at BWI.

That was the first and only time since the new terminal opened that PIT was ever shut down completely. Although with the ice and snow last night it was damn close to closing for a second time.
