ATC Question On " Eagle Flts Only"

Thu Feb 15, 2007 3:57 am

Currently JFK, BOS , LGW show a status of " Eagle Flts Only" on the Flt Information portion of the FAA's website.
What is an Eagle flt ... they cant be talking about American Eagle can they?

Due to EAGLE FLIGHTS ONLY and WEATHER SNOW (JET BLUE/JBU FLIGHTS ONLY), there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination".

If a company is incurring delays at a particular hub or focus city, they may institute a delay program system wide just for that city. For example, Cincinnati can have delay programs for Delta Connection aircraft, but everyone else will run on time. The delay is caused by the bottleneck of deicing. This delays aircraft in getting off the gate, and consequently they run out of gate and ramp space. It is cheaper for the company and more comfortable for the passengers to sit in the terminal at the departure city, rather than sit on the ramp at the destination.

Correct. In most cases when a ground stop is specific to an airline, it is gate related. Not necessarily deicing - just could be other weather stopping departures to a hub, and no gates spare for inbound aircraft.
