Spirit To Suspend Providence/PVD Service.

Fri Feb 16, 2007 11:20 am

Sadly, Spirit will be suspending service to Providence, Rhode Island as of 30 April 2007:

As of now, the suspension is seasonal, but just by reading the article you can tell that that might not be the case. They said the same thing with Dallas.

Well, NK wasn't a huge player in PVD, but it sucks for the PVDers to once again be without daily nonstop service to South Florida on a year-round basis.

FLL and RSW have HUGE O&D Add in that PBI is not served and....HELLO FL or B6 !?!?!?

If PVD has to loose NK to gain FL or B6, thats an ok trade in my book. WN has made it quite clear they do not really have an interest in PVD-So FLA.....DL (as DL express, then ended after 9/11) and NK have added it since 2000 and WN didnt respond either time. They are "dead end" routes for them (no feed either end).

It should also be noted that NK didnt even become the market share leader for PVD-FLL O&D though they were the only n/s provider, it was alot of connecting.

FL could do
3x ATL (DL slashed this market) Limited DL reponse because of BOS
1x FLL (2nd seasonal) no competition
1x PBI no competition
1x RSW no competition
TPA and MCO have a combined 2000+ daily O&D if they felt like taking on WN

Quoting RL757PVD (Reply 2):

What are the numbers? It's always disappointing when an airline suspends service, even if seasonally. However, I can't say that I'm too surprised. PVD isn't all that big and I imagine Spirit could easily deploy their aircraft on more profitable routes flying from much larger cities. Bummer none the less.

FLL in Q3..the lowest Quarter of the year was 337 daily, RSW had no n/s and thus was 83

go to Q1 and FLL is 630 daily and RSW is 450... so not very small #'s

The pax #s NK was posting showed pretty good #'s but my guess is the overhead for 1 daily May-Nov make it a looser.

It should be noted that for both FLL and RSW.....even with being the only n/s service, NK only had about 50% market share.

Id much rather see someone like FL or B6 come in and do:
RSW 450 daily no competition (NK)
FLL 630 daily no competition (NK)
PBI 268 daily no n/s service at all
