Delta's New Livery?

Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:07 pm

Howdy,
New here and have enjoyed reading everyone's comments the last several months. I have a close buddy at DAL that has told me a major "re-branding" is in the works which will do away with the current "ribbon" theme and a new all red widgets in some kinda 3-D effect will take its place on all ticket counter, signage and aircraft. Aircraft will be all white with red striping and the red widget on the rear and tail....no DAL blue! He didn't have anything to show, just described. Anyone else hear anything about this???

Welcome to Airliners!

It sounds nice...I think. At least the fuselage won't be all white, but the lack of blue is disappointing. I'm thinking something like this, but it won't look as good without blue IMO.

I was thinking about asking after the status of DLs new livery here for a few days now.... we had major discussions about that on this board in autumn but it got kinda drowned by the US/DL thing.... so I guess after US's deferral it was only a matter of time until it reappeared....

I must confess what you describe sounds UGLY, though....

Maybe the tail will look similar to the "Keep Delta My Delta" Buttons that we saw floating around.

I think the current colors look well enough. I will say this much, if I were one of those DL pilots who has taken pay cut after pay cut to save the airline, working ever so harder for less, less pay, less benefits...then to hear they are taking those dollars to once again throw some different paint on the airplanes, I, along with many, many others I am certain would take serious issue. In my opinion, I believe they should leave the colors of the airplanes alone and focus on getting the company out of bankruptcy protection and working to achieve profitability. For those who say the airline needs to somehow rebrand itself or create a new image, while all the other airlines of the world are busy playing musical colors...
American Airlines has remained unchanged, and I believe American's image is as good or even better then the other major carriers. Leave well enough alone.

Hmmm... mostly red eh? I wonder what carriers signature color is red? Could this be an interim paint scheme to bridge the gap between a certain merger? Is this foreshadowing or are we reading WAY too much into this? FWIW, I heard from a very reliable source back when NWA launched the current scheme that CO would be next. Here we are nearly 3 years later and the golden globe still flies.

I'd like to see the widget back but I like the present livery. To change one's livery means not just the plane but check in, the gate, vehicles, promotional items, internet, etc, etc, etc...how are bankrupt airlines, which force unions to make concessions, able to spend that kind of money? I'm probably in the minority but I think the present livery looks clean and it stands out as an American carrier for sure.

What is it with DL?...............They seem to change the colours on their aircraft every two weeks..........I would love to know how many different schemes they still have going as I suspect hafl of the fleet is still in its old colours!

Enough already!!

It seems everything in the past six months or so has already changed except the planes. The "flowing fabric" is gone from everything but the aircraft tails. The website is all new. And all promotional materials have the new multi-shade, wavy motif. With most of these materials in shades of blue, I would expect that to be the main color on the planes (other than white) when there is a redesign. I doubt red would be the prominent color, maybe more of an accent. We'll just have to wait and see.

And all of this branding is not a wasted expense. Bankrupt or not, an airline needs to market itself. There is always a marketing budget. For example, when Delta redid its website, it made no difference whether it had the old flowing fabric or a new look. The website needed to be redone regardless.

Exactly - something people often overlook or don't understand.

Aside from the money paid to the design agency, aircraft need to be repainted. There is no difference painting them in the existing livery or a new one.

That being said, I love the "flowing fabric" tail and will be sad to see it leave, altho being in Advertising realize that it stands for nothing. I say paint the tail wavy blue (like the current design being used on the promotional materials) and throw the WIDGET back up there - non-slanted, white top, red bottom

Aaaaahhhhhh! The third livery change in 10 years! Like I've said before, they are trying to make up for 30 some years of keeping the widget.

Hmmmm... an all red livery? Possible foreshadowing of an NW merger?  duck

Oh come on, Delta! If you HAVE to have a new livery, why don't you just revert to a 'refreshed' black-and-white livery? For Pete's sake!

Just my two cents.

I don't understand the airline industry well, but can someone explain to me how and why decisions are made to change livieries? The general opinion of the forum, myself included, favours the older widget scheme. Several years ago while connecting in Atlanta, I saw three different liveries. I can understand changing outdated or unpopular liveries, but why is Delta always in a state of change with their livery?

Wow... Delta has changed its livery so many times over the past 7 years... it seems that no two planes have the same livery in their fleet. I think the current one is the best and should be kept. I think "rebranding" is not a cost they want to go through now and as long as the company has the same name it does nothing to change customer preception.

I think Delta should concentrate on stabalizing itself financially, exiting Chapter 11, garnering consistent quarterly profits and improving the labour situation. Making their planes look pretty on the outside should be at the bottom of their list because customers fly because of what's inside planes not on what's outside.

Each of the two most recent liveries (one unveiled in 1997, the other in 2000) came about because Delta had a new CEO (Ron Allen first, then Leo Mullin) who wanted to put his stamp on the airline. The rumored new livery, if it happens, would be because 1.) Delta wants its livery to have a stronger identity with the widget, 2.) The airline is being "born again" by successfully coming out of bankruptcy and 3.) Delta wants to rid itself of any association with Leo Mullin, who nearly drove the airline into the ground.

You may like the current livery but it has very little visually identity with the widget, which IS Delta. As I stated before, rebranding is part of the overall marketing. Marketing, from advertising to printed materials to website, has to be continually updated no matter what. If you look at Delta this past year, the rebranding has already happened. It's done. All that's left to change now is the livery to match everything else. And the livery is essentially a billboard for the airline that thousands of flyers see every day at airports around the world. Just the same as Delta (or any other company) would never put up a billboard that didn't mesh with their overall brand image, an airline would not have a livery that is not a cohesive part of an overall branding effort.

I'd actually rather have the old livery compared the intermediate livery. It's got that retro feel going for it, much like the old Varig, or ATA, etc...

Exactly - it's part of a holistic approach to branding - through your design theme. Every company has one from Coca Cola to Nike to Procter & Gamble. We just finished reworking my Client's design theme and branding guidelines and have begun rolling them out executionally in TV and Print as well as interactive, DTC, FSCI and corporate marketing materials.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - this is part of marketing - a new livery is going to happen and anyone with a sense of branding or marketing should, in theory already know at least in their head what to expect with the new livery. There may be attributes we're not aware of, or slight tweaks Delta may make, but at the end of the day, Delta has already rolled out their new look, tone and feel of the Brand.

It's coming and I have a feeling we're gonna like it.

You are 100% correct and right on the mark. You and I obviously see things the same way. But you are apparently more "in the know" on Delta's upcoming livery changes than I am. Are you hearing anything in terms of timing (before exiting bankruptcy, at exit, a few months after exit)?

I'm thinking Delta should quit re-logoing airplanes and equipment and start making money. If you don't serve customers to sell tickets and MAKE money, a 14 carrot paint job won't make a difference. One would thought Delta would have learned this by now.

To be fair new liveries usually signifty an event in the companies history. And the two previous liveries did not exactly see DL through the best of times.

While there are, of course, costs associated with repainting the planes, I think this pertcular cost is one worth paying. NWA, UA, US, all launched new liveries lately, I didnt see too many cribbing at that point. NW even panted DC-10s months before they were due to leave the fleet....hardly a wise investment, but hey, Im not in charge at NW!

Deltas new look signifies its future, and the new livery is a farther rally point for the workers, especiually the return of the widget to the fleet. Look at the new uniforms, cabins, website, while the planes dont stand out as being a mis match, they dont exactly sit either. So I dont imagine that it will be a revolutionary change, mainly on the tail I expect.

When the employees were fighting to "Keep Delta My Delta" did they use the "deltaflot" wavy flag/ribbin? No. They used the widget. That alone is reason enough to "Bring back the widget"

Branding and logos, when done right and combined with a solid business plan, result in making money. Where would McDonald's be without the golden arches? Mercedes without the three-pointed star? Nike without the swoosh? It's basic marketing 101.

Delta have single handedly managed to produced some of the most disgusting liveries in aviation history and then worsen them every time they are 'replaced' with yet another new livery, only worse.  spit

If they are about to introduce yet another livery, lets hope it is finally something good.

I saw that plane in BRU a month or so ago - looked pretty sharp.

Well, gee...It only took 14 posts  Yeah sure

It doesn't cost any more money. The planes need to be pained anyway. The only cost would be in design and development, and if they develop a paint scheme that's easier and more cost efficient to apply, it would actually SAVE the company money.

Let it go.

Quoting UAL777UK (Reply 18):
.I would love to know how many different schemes they still have going as I suspect hafl of the fleet is still in its old colours!

lol...hardly. Two paint schemes, and there's only a handful of each type in the middle colors.

Quoting Flybyguy (Reply 26):
I think "rebranding" is not a cost they want to go through now and as long as the company has the same name it does nothing to change customer preception.

Quoting Flybyguy (Reply 26):
Making their planes look pretty on the outside should be at the bottom of their list because customers fly because of what's inside planes not on what's outside.

Quoting SPREE34 (Reply 35):
I'm thinking Delta should quit re-logoing airplanes and equipment and start making money. If you don't serve customers to sell tickets and MAKE money, a 14 carrot paint job won't make a difference. One would thought Delta would have learned this by now.

I was just in ATL on Tuesday, and the concourses are looking very nice. The gates and chairs at the gates look very nice, and are comfortable as well. The international terminal is VERY nice, and the food court is great. The last time I was there was August while they were working on everything, and now that it's almost done the airport looks great. I'm looking forward to the new livery, and seeing how DL evolves in the next few years.

Branding and logos, when done right and combined with a solid business plan, result in making money. Where would McDonald's be without the golden arches? Mercedes without the three-pointed star? Nike without the swoosh? It's basic marketing 101.

You pick some interesting examples; three of the most recognisable corporate logos - and powerful brands - in the world (you could add the Ford Blue Oval, Chevy Bowtie, Coca-Cola script/ribbon, Apple ... apple, etc.).

I think it's pertinent that all of those logos have existed with only minor changes for pretty much the entire lifespans of those corporations, which is why they have become so iconic, but for some reason airlines feel like they need to totally reinvent themselves every few years. You'd think that this industry, even more so that others, would be keen to project a sense of stability and corporate solidity (even if it doesn't really exist) to the public.

Imagine the marketing fiasco that would ensue if Coca-Cola ditched their script and ribbon motif for something that doesn't look so, well, 19th century, and in addition changed the colour of their cans to extreme purple - the idea seems ridiculous, and even the ill-advised "New" Coke kept the general theme intact.
On the contrary, USAir/US Airways (to use but one example of many) has changed its name once, its font three times, and its general colour scheme four times since being created in 1979.

Why are airline execs so beholden to "creative consultants" who just end up diluting the brand identity?

for one, I think change itself isn't bad if the brand identity is updated rather than radically changed (see for instance LHs livery change back in the 90s as a very good example).

When it comes to DL, your points show even more why they should change their livery again: bring back the widget to the tail! The widget is for DL what the star is for Mercedes and the apple is for Apple.

I haven't been to the International Terminal in quite a while...what has changed there?

I do agree though that all the work they are doing is starting to look very nice! People will be amazed the next time they fly into ATL. Love the new check-in and gate areas that Delta has recently introduced!

They re-did the food court, the walls, floors, and added new sculptures and art to the walls. Overall, everything is much more clean and fresh, in my opinion. DL's gates also look great with the new counters and chairs. I wish I could have gotten a picture, but I forgot my camera and my cell phone was almost out of battery.  Sad
